UTI's and Topical HRT.
« on: July 06, 2024, 08:56:49 AM »

Yet another UTI 3rd one this year.

After my last one in April/May that took 3 rounds of Antibiotics to clear I wondered if using Vagifem/Estriol cream more often would help in some way prevent/ease them so made an appointment to see a Dr to discuss if I could up from x 2 weekly, cream as and when.

As I've had so many UTIs over the last x amount of years the Dr referred me for an ultrasound scan on my bladder, outcome is the bladder had over 80mls of urine left once emptied, no more than 50mls is acceptable, and Dr wants to eliminate/confirm this could be the cause and has now referred me to a Urogynaecologist for further checks, waiting on appointment date.

The Dr sees no reason why I can't up the pessary to 3 weekly, more if I feel I need it, and has up my prescription to 2 boxes x 12 weekly.

I was just wondering for those that are prone to UTIs what's your weekly regime that helps keep everything ticking over down there, pessary internally, cream externally wise?

Also use YES moisturiser, which suits me, nothing when showering which the Dr says is fine as water does the job, D Mannose supplement but all this seems to do is waste my money instead of prevent.

Just to add no sexual penetration for years...so it's not that that causes the flare ups/UTI's.

Morning.  Have urine samples been sent for testing to see if they 'grow' a bug and if so, was an appropriate anti-biotic prescribed?  Many GPs still don't realise that vaginal atrophy mimics repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well  ::)

U can use 'vagifem' every night if required.  Some also use 'ovestin' on the outer vulva/labia to keep the area soft and less itchy.  I suggest that you do a re-load of 'vagifem' for 2 weeks, every night.

When I get the need2P symptoms I swallow 2 Nurofen 3 times a day to eat that nip as the spincter shuts off urine flow.

How long is your appt likely to take, R U able to accept a cancellation from the Dept if a patient cancels?  If so let the Dept know.

It's Trial and Error as well as managing a regime that suits each lady, hopefully GPs are OK about prescribing 'more' than they might think suitable!  1 cannot overdose on oestrogen replacement.  Let us know how you get on!

I've just had a urology consultant appointment following 3 uti's in 3 months. First thing he asked was what medication am I on? I've literally just started Vagifem (I'm 2 weeks in) on the advice of my GP. Consultant said that's exactly what he would have done! I'm booked in for an ultrasound to check my bladder function and to check on an ovarian cyst (something a different GP at my surgery said was nothing to worry about 🙄) but the specialist seems to think they're related to postmenopase.

Thanks...

I was on holiday when the symptoms started, but in all honesty at my age and having suffered UTI's since my 30's I'm pretty sure it's not VA this time.
Dr sent a prescription to the chemist for me.

Seems odd that a few times now when I've gone to insert the pessary it's difficult to actually insert it, feels very narrow down there, and the applicator feels like it has scratched the opening to my vagina then within a few hours the symptoms of a UTI start...I was literally going for a full on wee every 45 minutes or as near as, plus the smell and colour/look of the urine was a give away

I had a hysterectomy last year where cervix, uterus, tubes and ovaries were removed so not to worried about areas of concern there.
I've been using pessary/cream for some years now but still suffer.

Just such a nuisance as it really does affect my day to day life where going out is concerned....the need to be near a loo incase I need to rush to it just makes me want to stay home.

Not sure when the appointment will be, I'm in the UK and have had notification that I've been referred and am on the list, can except a cancellation if one comes through.

I'm hoping that someone can finally get to the bottom of why it happens so often, I've had a few cystoscopy's done over the years but never a firm confirmation of why it happens.
