Advice on using Ovestin please
« on: February 15, 2024, 07:09:54 PM »

Hello all,
I've just been prescribed Vagirux. However, I'm unable to use it internally at the moment as it's too painful. So (after exploring the MM forum) I asked for some Ovestin just to make things a bit more comfortable but can't see how much to put on the external areas - the tube is really small, so I wonder if it's supposed to be used sparingly?

For info: I've been on HRT patches, then oral meds and now low-dose patches) for 30 years following a surgical menopause. Lately I've been having have symptoms of VA which are getting quite bad. I need to start the cream while I'm waiting to increase the patches. I did have similar symptoms 15 years ago and was diagnosed with vulvodynia which lasted for 2 years.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum, hystergirl.
I would say about half a dose for using Ovestin externally. You should be able to judge it from the red line on the applicator. I hope it makes things more comfortable for you. When you are ready to try the Vagirux again, you can coat the applicator with some vaginal moisturiser to make it easier to insert.

Hi!  I use 'ovestin' with the measured amount in the applicator followed by a little smear around the vulva/labial areas when necessary.  Some have found 'yes' or 'sylc' products helpful too, I use KY Jelly too. IT's a bit Trial and Error.

'vagirux' may not suit.  There is also 'vagifem' or 'ovestin' the idea being to insert every night for 2-3 weeks then as necessary depending on how the vagina feels.  Every 3rd and 5/6th nights.

Let us know how you get on .

CLKD and Joaniepat (I can't see the individual reply button - I haven't got the hang of the site yet, so apologies),

Thank you both for replying and for explaining about the red line/half-dose measure. Would I still need to apply it at night or is that just for internal application?

Gels and moisturisers are maybe for later when this flare-up has settled a bit - I've always had extreme sensitivity to skin products e.g. I can only use E45 wash cream.

Vagirux is the option from my GP, but he did respond straightaway to my Ovestin request (when I mentioned this website!)

You've been really kind. I'll keep you posted.

I don't bother with the applicator, just use a fingertip amount externally every night. Rub it in well so it dont get wiped off if using the loo in the night. The tube usually lasts me about 3 weeks doing this. I also have Vagifem most nights.

I use Vagifem every night plus a pea size blob of Ovestin cream on the vulval skin, again every night.

Thank you Tinkerbell for the Ovestin advice. (Not able to use Vagifem/Vagirux right now but from reading the replies, it seems this is the best longer-term regime).

I'll post an update when things settle.

Have you not had any reaction, any bleed? I was on vagifem alternate nights and ovestin every night externally and have had to break after a bleed. Can't tolerate that frequency of dose

Jules - it is rare that vaginal atrophy treatment causes any bleeding unless the vaginal tissues are so thin!  MayB make an appt with your Nurse Practitioner for advice.

Jules- no bleeding problems. The meno specialist said quite safe to use every day as it doesn't cause the endometrium to thicken.

My GP said she's had other patients that have had bleeds. I had one when I first started using it 3 years ago. I had a scan and all was fine. Vagifem does give breast pain and bleeding as side effects. I had both last week so obviously it gets in the system. She distinguished too between the vagifem I insert and the ovestin used externally.  I don't think it's vaginal tissues breaking. That looked fine on examination.  I've been referred for scan anyway but because I asked. I'll ne waiting ages.
