Revisit to the gum clinic
« on: November 05, 2023, 08:27:54 PM »

I am visiting the gum clinic again tomorrow for a follow up swab to see if thrush has cleared with 2 Clotrimazole pessaries. Doctor wanted the gum clinic to do it instead of a do it yourself job. She didn’t want to prescribe any other medication until we know if it has cleared. Crossing fingers and toes it’s gone. I shall be asking why Nystatin pessaries can’t be prescribed as they were the ones they recommended for my strain (Glabrata). If they can’t I shall ask about Boric Acid pessaries these are also supposed be effective in clearing Glabrata. Has anyone else used Boric Acid pests Aries with good results? I feel 4 months have been wasted having been prescribed many Fluconazole tablets. Glabrata is resistant to Fluconazole. My ache is nearly gone, but not completely. It’s a job to know what is what downstairs. Is it thrush or am I just dealing with Atrophy now? Hope everyone else continues to make progress. Thank you for your support in this long thrush journey.

Hope your clear this time. I've been clear 3 weeks now after my do it yourself regime of 3 fluconazole tablets 72 hours apart. Ive been on holiday the last 2 weeks abroad with my family and feeling very relaxed and stress free which i believe has had a lot to do with this recurring thrush. I took a soft gel Clotrimazole with me in case but not had to use it. Did a lot of swimming in the sea and salt water pool and kept out of chlorine pools. 🤞 this is the end of it once and for all.

Hope it goes well for you Midnight Shadow.  I feel angry for you that the clinic said you needed Nystatin pessaries but by the way we can't give them to you.
Thank you again for sharing all the information.  At times i live in fear of something else going wrong down below but will know how to handle it now and keep a level head.

Do you find then that the salt water doesn't bring on soreness Dierdre ?  I keep out of pools and the sea now.
Hope that you enjoyed your holiday.

Thank you both for responding. So pleased Dierdre that you were able to enjoy your holiday. it must have been such a relief for you. Yes, I wasn’t very happy that the clinic said I needed Nystatin and then said they couldn’t prescribe it. We’ll see what today brings. Not looking forward to it, but know that it will soon be over. Take care.

Good luck today Midnight Shadow and let us know the outcome.

I find the saltwater soothing if anything Minusminnie.

Thanks for reply Dierdre.  That is good to know. I may give it a go now when we are next at the beach with grandchildren.

Saltwater is healing.  Dentists recommend it following treatment.

Pleased to hear about progress.
Just to note on swimming, removing wet swimwear immediately is quite important to prevent thrush occurring.  I am meticulous about this now and have purchased a beach changing robe which has been a game changer!

I made a beach changing robe in needlework classes, with a LOT of help from the teacher  ;D.  It was in blue/wh towelling, long, with a draw-string neck.  The idea being that 1 stepped into it from the top and somehow took off wet clothing etc. ........... which always landed in the sand  :(  ::). A real phaff.

Changing robes are now cosy waterproof, towel lined oversized coats or ponchos.  Daughter's friends clubbed together to get her a lovely one for a birthday.

Thanks for replies yesterday. Saw the same nurse as previously, she took two swabs the same as last time. I don’t think she knew Doctors couldn’t prescribe Nystatin Pessaries. I also mentioned Boric Acid Pessaries as I have heard some women have had success with for the Glabrata strain which I have. She didn’t realise they worked for Glabrata. The nurse asked if I was still taking fluconazole answer NO as my strain of yeast is resistant to that particular medication. I said I feel 4 months have been wasted taking fluconazole. Another question, was I not given a longer course of Clotrimazole? again I answered NO. Won’t know the outcome of this visit for several days as to whether I still have thrush. Crossing everything I haven’t.Hoping the thrush had cleared and it is just the Atrophy causing the mild ache which I am pleased to say has subsided greatly. Haven’t got much faith in the medical system at present. I don’t expect them to know everything, but they should at least know the basics. Rant over. Take care everyone.

All fingers crossed too for you Midnight Shadow or else you are back on the merry-go-round again.

(For different reasons i've lost faith in the medical system. It seems that you just have to be proactive, keep speaking up or pay for private nowadays).

Take care

Fingers crossed for you Midnight Shadow.  I agree - have very little faith in the nhs system when it comes to the matter of thrush or infections in post menopausal women or VA for that matter.  I think there is an extreme lack of interest or information int terms of diagnosis and appropriate treatments.
I was lucky enough to see a private consultant who specialises in this area but they even said they have other gynaecology specialists who refer to them as there is literally no information or training! It’s ridiculous.

Thanks for responding. Quite agree LDP there is a lack of interest in menopause issues. Hopefully, will get sorted eventually it’s taking too long.
