Author Topic: Taking utrogeston and just had a mirena, feel very low - too much progesterone?  (Read 878 times)

Hi, any experiences with coming off oral progesterone (uterogeston)  due to having a Mirena fitted? I was told to do keep up with the uterogeston for up to a month to allow the mirena to settle in and work.  However, I have felt so low and tired over the past week and wonder if it could be too much progesterone?  the Mirena was fitted about 10 days ago and I have no other symptoms like cramps etc.  It took me a while to get used to the oral uterogeston, so rather than increase the dose the gynae specialist thought the Mirena was the best option (I have had spotting and womb lining has increased slightly lately)  I used to have the Mirena in constantly until about 5 years ago when it had reached the end of its life and doctor said I was too old for it anyway...been on it for about 15 or more years for heavy periods and contraception.

Any advise/experience greatly appreciated

  • changes can be scary, even when we want them

Morning.  Probably too much progesterone, were R U in relation to using that part of the HRT regime?

I think it's likely to be too much progesterone too.

Thank you...yes I wondered that too but the consultant told me to take for a month to ensure the mirena is working properly (mind you when I said I thought I only had two weeks left of progesterone tablets he did say perhaps two weeks was enough...although I have since found another box) I am on it with estrodot so yes, as part of my HRT regime .  I feel horrid, and so tired too.  I guess I will just have to live with it until I can stop the utrogeston :-(

Definitely too much progesterone. You don’t need utrogestan now you have the mirena x

I was told to keep taking utrogeston to ensure the Mirena got properly into my system....altho the consultant agreed a month was probably erring very much on the side of caution.  I almost wish I hadn't gone down this path although utrogestan has never really agreed with me but I think I've got used to life with it...spotting and all.

Thank you...it's 10 days now and I've started spotting and have slight cramps which I was slightly concerned about.  Have read the mirena leaflet and for HRT it says you are protected straight away.  The consultant I saw was gynae and admitted he didn't have much experience with menopause, just the bit of training he had when training to be a doctor (and he wasn't young) So I may stop the utrogeston soon....just worried if I do the mirena won't protect me but not sure I can continue much longer on double doses!

Hmmmm…. I had a mirena fitted recently and was told by my consultant, GP and menopause specialist to stop the utrogestan straight away. So I did. No adverse effects……well…..the mirena has gone missing in action and is causing a lot of other problems…..but I definitely haven’t had an issue with stopping the utrogestan immediately the mirena was fitted.

My Mirena is somewhere, not sure where, causing intense pain, bleeding and pelvic inflammatory disease. This is the fourth week of heavy duty antibiotics. I went to have it removed last week and they can’t find it. I have an emergency gynae appt at the hospital later this week with x-rays to see where it’s migrated to. I’m hoping it can be located and removed without the need for an operation. I rather optimistically suggested it might have been expelled, but my symptoms suggest otherwise. I don’t want anyone to be put off having a Mirena though. I’m just unfortunate. Everyone else I know with one hasn’t had any problems at all.

Crikey, that’s awful for you.
I hope they can remove it without the need for surgery.
Will be keeping fingers crossed for you 🤞

Ermin2trude...keep us posted and hope you get sorted...I've not heard of this before.  I keep getting cramps...I didn't apart from the day after it was fitted but 10 days down the line they have started and I am spotting.  Annoying...I'm starting to wish I'd not bothered and gritted my teeth on the utrogeston...
