utrogestan troubles
« on: February 06, 2023, 07:03:20 PM »

Hi, I was prescribed estrogel 2 months ago after a few fails with patches and tablets (only the progestorone part). All was well on month 1, there were no side effects but no benefits either but early days. Doc told me to go to 2 pumps a day. Thats fine too, not really noticing anything as yet but i started the oral utrogestan 6 nights ago and have felt a depression come over me, today i have spent the whole day crying. I cant stand it, im so low. I haven had a period for 7 months but since starting utrogestan it feels like im going to but nothing comes. What benefits do you get from taking it vaginally? Would the depression ease? The heartburn after taking it orally? I was so relieved when i didnt get side effects last month and finally thought this was the right treatment for me. Any one else had this issue?

It will avoid any digestive issue. It may not solve the mood but worth trying vaginally to see.

Hello Tracy and welcome to the forum. I am sorry utrogestan has caused you to feel so low. I had the same reaction to it. It is worth trying vaginally just to see if you can tolerate it a bit better. If not then do not worry as you can try a different progesterone. Many members on here cannot tolerate ultrogestan so you are not alone there.

Just pop 'ultrogestan' into the search on here and you will find many threads on it. :)

Thank you both for the advice and the warm welcome.  I just watched a video from a doctor who says if using vaginally then just use 1 tablet instead of 2. I will try this as if i am sensitive then hopefully this would help cut the side effect. I do get a groggy feeling and im fine with that but the depression today was just awful, i had a brief window of normality at tea time so went for a walk along the beachfront and it was lovely but that sadness is creeping in again so im just going to go to bed and hope tommorrow is better. Thanks again

Hi, I had a much better day today and didnt get any heavy low feeling so thats good, i will continue with the 1 tab a day. I have just recently upped my estrogel to 2 pumps a day. Do I do both pumps in the morning or one at night and one in the morning? Tia

Hi

So sorry you are having problems with Utrogestan. As many others on here have said you are definitely not alone.

I was exactly the same when I first started it. Couldn’t tolerate it at all. Turned me into a depressive psycho!! Not to mention the bloating and headaches. My menopause specialist suggested we did blood tests to see where my oestrogen levels were and they were very low ( I wasn’t absorbing very well with the gel) . I change over to a patch which I absorbed better and once my oestrogen levels got to the optimum level I found that the side effects of the utrogestan subsided substantially. It really is trial and error. At first my gynaecologist agreed that I took the utrogestan on a cycle ( 12 days a month vaginally) while my body got used to it. But now I am taking it every evening and I find I am tolerating it so much better.

I hope this helps and it settles down with you too.

Hi Westie,

That sounds awful, luckily ive not had headaches, bloating maybe. Ive just realised since reading posts on here that ive been applying the gel wrong, i was putting it on the outside of my thigh. Thats where i used to have the patch (everil something ) so assumed it was the same place. I will apply it on the inside of thigh tommorrow.
