Coming off HRT
«
on:

Hi all
I’m planning on coming off HRT as I think it’s causing hyperpigmentation on my face. It’s pretty unsightly, so want to go without Oestrogen to see if it calms down.
I have a coil fitted. Do you think it’s okay to leave that in for now? It may be that I need to return to Oestrogen later if symptoms become unmanageable and I tend to bleed on utrogestan, so don’t want the coil removed too quickly.
Thanks

Hi Nas
I’m not sure about the coil hopefully someone else can advise.
But thought, is shouldn’t you slowly lower the oestrogen rather than stop cold turkey?
That might also show if the hyperpigmentation is dose dependant.

Mmm good thinking re the reduction in dose, March. I don’t even know if it’s the oestrogen which is the problem , as I’ve been on that since July 2019 and this hyperpigmentation arrived only 4 months ago. It could just be the menopause in general or something else which is causing it.

All you can do I suppose is start with that and see how it goes.
It might indeed be the cause but did you have this at all before the coil was fitted?

No, I don’t think I did have the skin issues before the coil was fitted. Not to the extent I gave now anyway x

Sounds like it’s one or the other then!
Have you increased your oestrogen since you had the coil fitted?

I remember reading that having a Mirena could cause bleeding as lining can get too thin if not using HRT. Not sure if that is true though.

Plenty of women use the mirena for contraception or to control heavy periods. I had mine for years before I started HRT, so I expect it will be fine to leave it.

Could it actually be the coil then Nas?

Probably March,
I won’t know if it is the coil as I can’t afford to have it removed, particularly if I have to return to HRT. It has stopped the bleeding dead in its tracks, so it’s got to stay put for that reason. X
