Hello Ali. It is frustating to only hear about how easy it is to take HRT and how people are transformed. I have tried 5 different progesterones and each one caused severe depression. I am waiting for another appointment to discuss this. You are not alone in this. I am sorry things are so difficult.

Side effects from progesterone/progestogens is unfortunately a main reason why many women end up abandoning HRT. Whilst Utrogesten is classed as the most ‘natural’ unfortunately it has to be taken in such a large dose that many women still suffer side effects from it. It is also sedating which can be a useful side effect in some women but cause very low mood and depression in others.  The only thing I can suggest is trying  an estrogen only patch, tablet or gel with Provera as the progestogen which is often fairly well tolerated as the dose required isn’t too high. It’s reasonably similar to dydrogesterone which is the progestogen used in Femoston which although you said it ‘didn’t really do anything’ sounds as though it didn’t have horrendous side effects for you either? Might be worth a look at the Treatments tab to see if there's anything there you haven't tried. Provera does seem to tolerated fairly well so perhaps worth a try. Did you use utro vaginally or orally? Could be worth trying vaginal if you haven't already. If you no longer have a strong cycle of your own you could use a 6 week cycle so you have more 'good' time (that's what I do). According to Louise newson but not besins you can halve the dose if used vaginally (so 100mg x 12 days). Some women who are intolerant use as little as 100mg x 7 days but this needs to be with medical supervision and regular scans. Fitting a mirena where it's difficult seems to depend on the skill of the operator so you may be better at a sexual health clinic where they're doing it all the time (and ask for pain killers if required).

It took me ages to find the right combo and in the end it was the addition of a mirena coil  and 100g estodot that made a difference. Re depression sadly I am still taking anti depressants too. Our bodies are all different so keep trying to get what helps. Hrt certainly wasn't a magic patch but it does help.

Thank you so much for all your replies.

I think this week has just got to me slightly I loved the Davina documentary and it would be bloody brilliant if anyone who needed access to a menopause specialist could access one. But I burst out crying at the end of the show just feeling as low as I have ever done.

Again thank you all for your time I really appreciate it 😘😘😘

Are you seeing a menopause DR via the NHS? You are entilted to see one. I know what you mean about that programme. Everybody seemed to feel wonderful after HRT. If you look on here you will see that most do not have that experience.

My surgery has a menopause nurse so we are probably lucky in comparison to most.

It’s all pretty difficult especially when trying to work at the same time too x

Thank you for taking the time to reply x

That is really good. I can understand how difficult it is when having to work. I find phone appointments helpful but I know not everybody likes them.

You are welcome. :)
