Cold turkey HRT
« on: December 30, 2021, 08:49:49 PM »

I was on HRT for ten years then two months ago I had a health scare and was told to stop it right away. At first it was fine I thought this is ok not as bad as they say how wrong I was the last two weeks have been wretched.I have the worst night sweats ,crying at the drop of a hat ,flushes and now forever needing a wee!I'm 60 now ,so hoping to God things will settle eventually but I would be reall grateful for some advice on alternative things l could try.

Hi Jenny j. Do you mind sharing what the health scare was as quite often it seems to happen that women are just told to stop HRT and never actually told that they can restart.

I've found that my hot sweats etc return within three months of stopping HRT and I've always restarted but some women do find that the symptoms do gradually ease. For hot flushes some women have found that a medication called Dixarit (Clonidine) can help. It's a blood pressure drug but can help with reducing flushes There is an Alternative thread on here too which may give you some ideas.

For bladder problems are you able to use a topical HRT such as Vagifem?

Jenny, I really feel for you!
I also stopped HRT three weeks ago, due to bleeding and pain.
Well, Christ it feels as if I am dying a slow painful death!

Going cold turkey isn’t a good plan in my experience.
Could you not have tapered off slowly? The body has gone into shock, hence the symptoms returning with a  vengeance.

I don’t have much faith in supplements, but sage tincture can be good for sweats. Vagifem or ovestin is good for bladder.
Maybe try red clover or soya isoflavanes?
Clonidine as Taz has has mentioned, can be good for flushes too.

Best of luck, it’s miserable I know x

Could you get a second opinion from a Meno specialist? My understanding was that transdermal hrt has no impact on blood clotting risk etc.

It makes me so mad that these Doctors make life-changing decisions about medications without referring the patient to the appropriate dept..  Gynaecologists often don't know much about HRT .......... it would have been good that you were seen by a chest physician whilst in Hospital, the gynaecologist could have asked him/her to see you B4 you were discharged?

I am interested in how soon after surgery you were discharged home and hopefully you have a follow-up appt.?  Too many patients are discharged too early!

It really does depend on what caused the blood clots which hopefully is being investigated?  Many develop blood clots whilst on bed rest for example.  It's when they stand up that they suffer symptoms.  Have you been given appropriate 'socks' to encourage good blood flow?  R the clots still present, if so have you been put on medication?

In the mean time, ask your GP for a referral to a menopause clinic.

You shouldn't need to go private, however, it may be quicker to get an appt..  Let us know how you get on?

What was the cause of the clots?  I know that being inactive can encourage them to form ...... however, was your GP/Surgeon aware of your immobility = possibility of clotting?

Little steps. Keep in touch ;-)

The clots were caused because I had hadent been mobile for a few weeks where as I normally would have walked miles it hed nothing to do with hrt.

Defo see a Meno specialist! I'm sure you will be able to be back on HRT then.
