Natural insect repellent
« on: July 25, 2021, 02:54:07 PM »

When I get bitten I often experience allergic reactions to certain bites. I am looking for soemthing that doesn't contain DEET to put on to try to prevent this. I tried Avon so soft as suggested on here, but unfortunately it gives me a rash. There must be something in it that my skin doesn't like. Any tried and tested solutions would be much appreciated.

Lemon or lavender is supposed to keep insects away.  MayB look at soaps which you could use on your neck, arms, face?  It's those insects that creep up from behind and a couple of days later, the itching begins  >:(

'Deet' remains the best anti-bite mozzie spray - if U don't want to apply it 2 your skin then put it onto the clothing?  DH puts it on his wide brimmed hat when fishing or if we go walking as well as at the bottom of his jeans to stop 🛑 insects creeping underneath!

After insect bite ointments are available, I've used TCP paste successfully.

I did a google -

What is the best homemade mosquito repellent?

Lemon eucalyptus oil. Used since the 1940s, lemon eucalyptus oil is one of the more well-known natural repellents. ...
Lavender. ...
Cinnamon oil. ...
Thyme oil. ...
Greek catnip oil. ...
Soybean oil. ...
Citronella. ...
Tea tree oil.

Repel - a USbased company - worth a lookC as ingredients will be similar

We have used 'jungle formulae' too.  I put 'non deet sprays' into the search and it came up with plenty of ideas

Thank you for the suggestions CLKD. I saw on a NHS site that Lemon Eucalyptus is supposed to quite effective. Ive now got to try and find it already prepared in a spray! I also wonder why the so soft upsets my skin, don't usually have allergies. I bought it from Amazon so Im wondering if its the genuine product.

Eating garlic is supposed to help too - just don't breathe anywhere near me  ;D

I used to feed my dogs garlic capsules, to try and counter fleas  ::), the idea being that should they take a bite they got a gob full of garlic  ;D

Some people are allergic to the fillers in products.  You could let Avon know with the batch number in case others have complained?

Apparently nutritional yeast is a good flea repellent for dogs, more effective than brewers yeast. I imagine that should mean it works as a general insect repellent. It may be down to the b vitamins it contains, I've read that vitamin B1 can be helpful.
