Hello - New here and after some advice pls
« on: April 30, 2021, 01:43:38 PM »

Hello  :)

This is my first post (nervous) but I have read lots of the discussions on here and would like to say that this website prompted me to see a menopause specialist, so thank you!  I honestly thought something was seriously wrong with me as I had so many symptoms and just couldn't believe they were peri-menopause related.  The Dr went through a questionnaire with me and told me that I have most of the peri-menopause symptoms.  I am 46 and have 4 children.

She has prescribed estrogel (2 pumps) and utrogestan (200 mg for 12 days of cycle).  This is the first month of HRT and I felt a little better when applying the gel but taking the utrogestan has made me feel awful.  It makes me feel really wired and I can't go to sleep and keep having electric shock feelings through my body and heart (which was what I was getting before but this is worse).  I also had really bad bloating and period cramps.  I have had the mirena coil in the past and felt awful with that, so am wondering now if I am progesterone intolerant.  I've read about using the utrogestan vaginally but the dr didn't mention that so I'm not sure what to do.  I'm not due to see her for 3 months.

Anyhow, sorry for the long first post.   My questions are:  Has anyone had any experience of Utrogestan making you feel wired, anxious and can't sleep?  Would using it vaginally stop this?  If I persevere will these side effects settle down?

I'm ready to stop taking it as feel almost as bad as I did before :(

Thanks so much.

Hi,welcome. I get terribly "wired" on Utrogestan, I feel like I have had way too much caffeine. I could not tolerate the 200mg, I use 100mg 12 days per month vaginally, it causes a monthly withdrawal bleed and seems to work well. The 200mg also gave me awful tinnitus. The 100mg are smaller but not sure if your Dr would be happy with this, you could always try, and see.

Thank you so much for your replies.  I have the 100mg capsules.  I was told to take 2 orally.  I think I might try one of the 100mg capsules vaginally and see if that makes a difference.
Cassie - do you mind me asking, does taking the 100mg vaginally help you with the 'wired' feelings?  I'm sure my Dr will be ok with me trying this, she's a menopause specialist so she's very on board with everything.  She did say it may require some playing around with to find the right levels for me.  She said to start on 2 pumps of estrogel and I can always 'up' the dosage if I need to.
Thanks again for replying and thank you for the welcome :) x

Hi JoannFran  :welcomemm:

Yes, me too & a few other members have had same reaction.  Tried it both orally & vaginally with various doses of oestrogen for up to 5 weeks (continuously) & unfortunately can't use it either way.  But you may find you can tolerate it vaginally, especially if on a cycle, so well worth a try.

Sorry for short post.  In a hurry today.  I wish you luck with it.

If you're still bad using it vaginally perhaps try a different progestin. You may find you're OK with something else.

The 100mg still makes me feel jittery but definitely not as bad as the 200mg did. Although I must say the last cycle I used it, I tended to sleep quite well for a change, so hoping it works for you as well, give it a try and let us know.
