Oestrogen / urticaria link?
« on: March 19, 2021, 09:06:27 PM »

Recently I’ve lowered my hrt dose. Apart from very dry skin and eyes (my original reasons for starting hrt) I’ve been feeling quite good, better than on the higher dose.
A couple of weeks ago I developed urticaria, I’ve had it constantly every day since. Could there be a link here? I’ve had a quick search on here but I’m mainly seeing urticaria due to high doses of hrt. Wondering if it could be due to low estrogen or to the change in the level of estrogen. I’m going out of my mind with the constant itching and reluctantly thinking I might need to up my dose again.

As oestrogen levels drop the body mayB dry, inside and out: skin, scalp, vagina, anus, between the toes, deep in the ears, eyes ..........  ::)

Do you think this can cause urticaria though?

NHS website: A pharmacist can help with hives -

Your pharmacist can give you advice about antihistamine tablets to bring down your hives rash.

Tell your pharmacist if you have a long-term condition

Is there any mention in the leaflet for the HRT?  MayB put the product name into the search box to see if anything pops up?

Hey Jaylow,

As you may have read my most recent post as a newbie about 'itching', I thought I would briefly share my experience.  I developed this nearly 3yrs ago.  Went to allergy clinics (nothing), immunologists (nothing), then I was put on an injectable form of treatment as 4 x antihistamines a day wasn't doing a thing!  This injectable ensures I have NO hives whatsoever and it is bliss.... that is until after six months I have to stop, get assessed, it comes back, then I go back on treatment.

During this time I have been researching the possible link between meno/perimeno and urticaria and the results are coming up pretty solidly that it is connected.  Nobody however will listen to me or investigate it further, nor offer blood tests to see if my oestrogen is on the floor.  To say I'm frustrated is an understatement and my quality of life whilst off the medication is unbearable.

So this is just a note to say, I've got your back and I feel your pain....

Take care of you xx

Hey CLKD...

That's the thing, my skin isn't apparently dry on inspection and Chronic Urticaria and Angiodema evolves from within which makes my point of what i'm depleted of?  Anyhoo... I shall keep you all updated because if i can help anyone with this horrendous crap I'd be happy to!! xx

Take care of you xx

I had 'heat bumps' for years++ from aged 8 through to my late 20s.  I showed them to many different specialists over the years and no one had an answer.  Dad called them 'sugar spots'.  Usually formed where elastic rubbed, i.e. under my bra straps or the back of my knees ..........

Hi Fanny, I’m up in the night itching as usual and saw your reply, sorry that you’re experiencing this too.
Yes I’m convinced it’s hormone related (a gp I saw said it wasn’t). What confuses me is most things I read show estrogen dominance causing excess histamine which results in hives. In my case I don’t feel like my estrogen is high and I certainly don’t want to increase progesterone. I’m thinking of giving patches a try as I cannot get along with this utrogestan. And failing any change with patches, I’ll come off hrt and try a natural route.
What hrt are you taking?
Good luck and I’ll update if I find anything that helps.

Urticaria is a histamine  response usually to an allergen. Has anything changed in the past few weeks? New soap powder, new foodstuff? Different hrt brand? An allergy to anything can bring on urticaria and sometimes you never find out what caused it.

I had urticaria this week for the first time in years but only on my arms. I’ve had a lot of weird skin things going on and I don’t know if it’s the hrt or even a response to sunshine or suncream. Or if hrt caused the response to sunshine or suncream. I guess I’ll never know

I’d be interested to know too, as I believe my urticaria is strongly linked to low estrogen

Hi all
I developed hives pretty soon after starting evorel conti. I had been on gel and utrogestan but didnt get them on that. My hives ( which I have never had before in my life) are single hives/spots which develop on my arms and legs mainly. After much studying of possible triggers- food, allergens etc I realised they were triggered early in the morning and early evening if I got chilled. So it is a temperature thing with me. I also had some episodes of angiodema first thing in the morning and last thing at night which I found very alarming. I now take one antihistimine  when I go to bed and avoid them now. I mentioned them to my practice nurse who thought they were definitely related to hormones. But I could not say if low oestrogen or high oestrogen related. I will discuss at my up and coming HRT review.

I'm following this with interest. I had an episode of hives with upper lip and eyelid swelling a few weeks ago. I also had muscle pain and vomiting. The vomiting came first and then the hives lasted for about 4 days. The frustrating thing is I've no idea what caused it. It could be low estrogen. I'm 42, had early menopause and on an Evorel 25 patch and Utrogestan (12 days of cycle) . Im not usually allergic to anything and I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary that day. My Moderna covid vaccine had been 4 weeks earlier so could it have been a delayed reaction??  :-\

Hello ladies.

Can I ask a question?

I occasionally get what I call a 'heat lump' on my skin. It comes on suddenly and a patch of skin becomes red, hot and itchy and a spot appears at the centre of the red patch. It is very itchy and I need to scratch it and sometimes put something cold on it. These patches appear and disappear quickly and last week I had a lot of episodes but none this week. I can't figure out why they happen as nothing obvious has changed. I used to get them sometimes when I was younger but they could still be hormone related.

I have done some research but not found anything that matches my experience.  I was thinking that the next time one appears I will take a picture and email it to my GP to see if he has any ideas.

Any thoughts ladies? I'd be interested to hear your views.

Take care.
