Driving
« on: March 14, 2021, 02:40:25 PM »

Hi,
At my wits end here. Been on HRT since June 2019. First gel and utrogestan, then patch and utrogestan. My issues, insomnia and anxiety ( around driving fast bendy roads) .

I have tried everything to deal with this. Upped gel slowly, no results. Then bloods revealed poor absorption, so switched to patch. I was on 100 patch and continuous utrogestan and had been since September 2020, but symptoms  remained.

Now waiting for a referral to a menopause clinic on the NHS, as I have had breast  cancer in the past ( I was under Chelsea and Westminster but got discharged last year and no GP wants to prescribe HRT unless I’ve seen a specialist)

I am at my wits end. Anxiety every day. Driving a major trauma. What can I do? I’ve tried Cbd oil, propranolol, breathing etc etc and nothing works. My sleep  is appalling and I’m suffering. God knows how long an appointment will take to come through. I can’t afford a private specialist.

Any thoughts please?
Thanks

You should be able to speak to the Oncologist at the Chelsea and Westminster

There is a Dr - name escapes me - who prescribes HRT to women with a history of breast disease.  I think that he is State side.  The name will come to me later  ::)

How does your anxiety start?  The waking hormone, cortisol, was my big problem: anytime from 3.30 a.m., I would wake terrified  :'(.

Eating regularly can ease anxiety surges.  That is, every 3 hours  ;).  As can appropriate anti-anxiety medication, especially if you are unable to access HRT.

I used 'valium' successfully in the 1990s, by taking 1 x 5mg tablet the night prior to any event that I couldn't avoid. Knowing that I could take another mid-morning if anxiety didn't settle: I never had to.  Betablockas taken at night served me well from 2002 until 2020.  The GP has prescribed an 'as necessary' anti-anxiety drug which I haven't required for 2 years.  It's there.  Should it be necessary.

Don't suffer anxiety, there are many medications that can help.  Relaxation therapy has to be practiced daily.  Have you tried the relaxation of all the muscle groups: whilst laying in bed, start at the toes, calves, thighs - working up the body, tense, relax and hold.  'rescue remedy' mouth spray can help too.

R there routes that you can take to build up confidence when there isn't as much traffic round?   A friend of mine, recently bereaved who hasn't driver for years, is having instruction once lockdown is eased.

Yes I’ve already spoken to an oncologist. I’ve just been referred back to Chelsea but there will be no guarantee of  an appoint in told.
Propranolol was prescribed but it has little to no effect. Neither does rescue remedy.

My partner currently sits beside me in the car on occasions, but it’s the open fast roads which terrify me. It’s like I feel exposed and vulnerable! This has been going on since January 2019 and I’ve had enough. We live semi rural, so to get anywhere requires some degree of fast driving.

I kind of understand.  When I came out of Hospital the traffic went so fast ...... DH was driving but after 10 days inside, the World was far too quick.

When I drove regularly I would get an energy dip about 4.00 so made sure that I had a banana B4 driving home as there was no where to pull off which made my anxiety worse  :-\

What do you need to go out for?  Is there any way of getting items delivered?

Insomnia and anxiety were my worst symptoms, it took 3 months but the anxiety has completely gone, sleeping isn't like it used to be but so much better than it was. How much gel are you on? I was told by a specialist I could use up to 6 pumps but haven't needed more than 4. Unless you want anxiety medication I think you need to keep increasing the oestrogen. You may find you get more from oral and there is an implant too though they don't often prescribe it.

If you don't feel comfortable driving fast don't do it. We tend to get more cautious as we get older anyway, probably a good thing as our reactions are slower. I can't believe how fast I took the corners when I was going to work, I wouldn't do it now. Would you feel more comfortable if you had a bigger more solid motor?

Hi Sheila,
I was on 100mg patch so the equivalent of 4 pumps of gel. I am not on any HRT now as I have run out and awaiting an appointment to see a specialist. Anxiety still continued on the 100 patch and the 4 pumps of gel previously anyway, so I guess I am not absorbing transdermal.

I have to drive these roads due to where I live, but have to go much slower.

Not sure I could handle a bigger car, a small car is hard enough to deal with, in my current state..
