I can't believe the amount of sparrows we have here at our new abode,my bird feeders are on a small tree and it literally moves with them, such a novelty as we had no sparrows at the house in Wiltshire, when I go to refill the feeders, they don't even leave the tree, they just chatter incessantly  ;D

Which type of sparrow, hedge sparrows are quite rare  8).  I love 'em.

Gold finches twittering on the feeders here.  Not much taking the meal worms yet.  Wren was nagging me yesterday as I walked round the garden  ::)

Look at the RSPB site initially - there isn't much difference. However.   ;)

It says that the only difference is the colour on top of their heads,so going by that, they're hedge sparrows  :)

That's lucky as they are rare.  MayB let your local Nature Group know ?

Isn't a hedge sparrow a dunnock and not a sparrow at all? I thought they were common but maybe that's in the south where I am? Dunnocks are ground feeders and rarely try to eat from feeders. Do you mean a tree sparrow which is less common?

Dunnocks.  Hedge.  Tree sparrows - all different. Dunnocks are quite shy - there are several here  8)

Yes we have them too. We call them Hedge Bettys. I meant that the alternative name for the dunnock is the hedge sparrow but they are not rare so it wasn't hedge sparrows that jaypo was seeing on her feeders but maybe tree sparrows.

Of course Dunnocks/Hedge sparrows are not even sparrows but a different species all together. Just to confuse you even more jaypo  ;D

I love watching our mob of sparrows having dust baths on the veg patch. Not so keen when they eat our runner bean flowers though.  >:(

Bees will go into bean flowers too, they are lazy so don't go into the top but drill through straight to the nectar  >:(
