Utrogestan - Scotland
« on: February 27, 2020, 06:43:11 PM »

Hi

Am wondering if any ladies in Scotland have had Utrogestan taken off them?

I am badly progesterone intolerant and Utrogestan is the only progesterone I can take.

Today I have been told categorically that I cannot have it any more as it 'is not safe'  to be used for HRT.

They deny it is to do with cost - despite it being more expensive, and the fact that ladies in the rest of Scotland, in England, Wales, Australia, Europe and elsewhere can all have it prescribed despite this alleged 'danger' to their health.

I am under NHS Lothian health authority.

I do not know where or who to turn to next, there appears to be no PALS in Scotland.

I am extremely upset.

Any help or input would be very welcome right now...   :'( :(

Hi Clovie,

So sorry you're still struggling to get Utrogestan. Maybe show this to your doctors?

I know different health authorities have their own policies, but you can try.

THANK you Bear!  :tulips2:

I think the answer to the question 'What happens if a particular medicine is not routinely available in NHS Grampian? ' has a pertinent point as it says... 'If a medicine is not routinely available and included in the Grampian Joint Formulary and
there are no suitable alternatives on the formulary, a healthcare professional can request to
prescribe a medicine that is not on the formulary if they think you will benefit from using it.
All health boards have procedures in place to consider requests when a healthcare
professional feels a medicine that is not on the formulary would be right for a particular
patient.'

I will print this off and add it to any other sources I can find, when I feel a bit better, feel so drained right now :(

I've waited ages for an appointment with a menopause specialist and it was she who point blank said NO at her first opportunity :(
I had already been through this whole long drawn scenario with a meno specialist in another part of the UK who had me try several synthetic progs before finally declaring me prog intolerant and prescribing me the Utrogestan.  The next step was to be offered a hysterectomy had this med not worked. :(

Sorry you?re having such a crap time Clovie. I'm not sure what's going on with Grampian. I'm greater Glasgow and via my private consultation initially and subsequent referrals to the nhs menopause clinics at stobhill and Glasgow Royal Infirmary, I get Utrogestan no problem via a prescription from my GP. It most definitely appears to be a postcode lottery but I don't understand why that might be the case. Can you ask Dr Currie for advice on this? X
