Stopping HRT before surgery
« on: February 26, 2020, 07:47:33 PM »

Hello Ladies, I have a friend at work who has to have her gall bladder removed. She had a hysterectomy some years ago and uses estradiol gel. She had her pre-op and they have told her to stop taking it 4 weeks before surgery, is this the case or is it ok to carry on using it as it's not ingested? Thank you for any advice   :)

Maybe she should be ringing the Surgeon's Secretary  or the Anaetheatis? :-\

I think Fimble she does have to stop using it, I'm sure it's to do with developing thrombosis.
I remember reading that somewhere.
Hope she's ok anyway and it all goes ok for her.

I thought the increased risk of thrombosis was only with oral hrt? Could she ask a meno specialist? Might be worth an email to Dr Currie if she has no one else.

I had to stop my patches one month before my hysterectomy to lessen risk of blood clots.

Hi there is no need to stop any form of transdermal HRT as gels and patches do not increase the risk of clotting x

If she is using systemic HRT she does not need to stop as per a conversation in my VA group with a GP and also the NICE guidelines also make it clear.

Depends on type of HRT basically

Does it also depend on age? I was 60 and had to come off the patches for one month before and one month after. I'm glad guidelines have changed now. Maybe the manufacturers should update the advice on the patient information leaflets too.
