Side effects
« on: January 20, 2020, 09:36:39 AM »

It's a lovely bright frosty morning today and I'm hoping for some advice.
I have been taking 1 pump of oestrogel and 100mg of utrogestan for 8 days now. The main side effects so far have been nausea and abdominal discomfort- needing to go to the the toilet more often. I also have a reduction in appetite and a slightly drugged up feeling.  On the bright side, I do feel a bit more relaxed and possibly slightly more optimistic.
I know its early days but having read a lot of the posts on utrogestan I am wondering if, given the low dose of oestrogel I am taking, would I be better taking it every other day or increasing the dose of oestrogel.  I am assuming the side effects are due to the utrogestan but may be wrong. I am 5/6 years post menopause.
I am interested in different regimes of taking hrt but dont feel confident to make changes without expert advice. I suppose this would mean having to see someone privately.

Hi Mintea. It does indeed sound like the Utrogestan which can cause the problems you mentioned and also has a sedative effect. I'm assuming that you are taking the Utrogestan on a daily basis. It's early days so I'd give it some time to settle. No point in upping your oestrogel dose if you don't need it.
Some of the Utrogestan side effects can be minimised if you use it vaginally so I wouldn't imagine you'd want to dothis on a daily basis. Perhaps you can do alternate weeks ( or days ) on taking it orally or vaginally to see if this makes a difference. At this stage, I wouldn't recommend that you drop the dose. See how it all settles down. X

Thanks MicheleMaBelle
Just wondering if I increase the oestrogel, would it reduce the side effects of the utrogestan?  I feel very sedated today which I havent felt before but I know its early days.
I might try alternate weeks or days vaginally. I do have VA though which I use vagifem and ovestin for.

Thankyou for your input. I feel as if I've taken some tranquilizers. I do suffer from anxiety but not usually any problems sleeping.

Are you saying alternative days vaginally might be a good idea but not orally?

I would prefer to make changes with GPs involvement so think I'll wait until I see her but it's nice to be fully informed before. I'm seeing her in a few weeks. I agree its probably best to stick with 1 regime for a while to see if things settle down.

I do like the idea of alternate days vaginally and also just using the utrogestan for 10 to 12 days every other month in the way you mention.

Is this something I would need to see a specialist for as it seems quite a specialist area or something to suggest to my GP at some point?

Are you continuing with your regime and was it set up under your GP?

Stellajane

That's really helpful and very interesting. Where's the best place to obtain information about the different regimes as its something I would like to look into in more detail. Is there a reference book that can be used?

Do you use the Oestrogel continuously at the moment or have some days off?

Thanks for all your help so far.

I have a couple of books - The oestrogen window and oestrogen matters which I'll look at and also google is usually helpful!

Thanks for all your help so far.
