Mirena coil as a form of HRT
« on: December 18, 2019, 01:37:09 PM »

Hi

I've been on HRT patches since January, starting on 50mg, increased to 75mg in August and now on 100mg. I can't say its helping and I'm waiting on an appointment for some investigations just to rule out anything nasty.

The specialist suggested I start with the mirena coil plus oestrogen gel - has anyone got any experience of this and if it helped with menopause symptoms? My biggest problem with the (peri)menopause is the anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of ability to concentrate etc

Thanks

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I'm on 75mcg Estradot and the Mirena.

Initially I didn't want the Mirena but it's been great, not bad on insertion, bit crampy for 2 weeks, but now no periods, which is a major plus as I had massive flooding, no real side effects. Had it for 18months, everyone is different but this works for me.

Good luck x

I have a Mirena coil, i was one year post meno , fitted three years ago for HRT purposes, i use 3 pumps of Estrogel. I have been really happy with it although i did have 4.5 months of spotting at first, really hoping i can have another one when it needs replacing.
I seem to have no side effects from Mirena and Estrogel has really helped with the meno symptoms.

I did start with Estradot patches but i had problems with skin irritation, i also had issues with them sticking so the absorbtion wasn't so steady.

What are you on? Sequi or conti? I'd be inclined to get the oestrogen sorted out first. If it isn't working either you need a higher dose or the prog you're using doesn't suit you. You could try oestrogel with utrogeston vaginally on a cycle, using a cycle means you'll bleed but you'll also know if it's the prog that causing the problem. People absorb differently so it may be that you're actually getting less oestrogen than you think. My anxiety went in 3 months.

I had a Mirena coil and Evorel low dose patch.  I felt the best I'd ever felt.  Was devastated when they came to replace it but couldn't, as my womb had shrunk so a new one was not possible.
Now on Evorel Conti and almost back to normal.

I use the mirena coil as hrt along with Elleste Solo 1mg oestrogen tabs.

My coil was recently replaced. Previous one was in for 3.5 years.

Has been a godsend as I had really heavy periods and now they've completely stopped.
