HRT at last
« on: October 10, 2019, 02:42:40 PM »

I have finally been given hrt by a private gynaecologist. Have got Estrogel, Utrogestan 100, testosterone cream(to follow - out of stock) and Vagifem!!!
Please could you lovely ladies tell me if to use the estrogel and utrogestan capsules together, morning or night?
Also should I start the estrogel a few weeks before the the utrogestan as I seem to recall Dr Newsome saying the body accepts the progesterone better once the oestrogen levels are up.
I have just got home with them & feel I want to get started asap!!!!
Sorry to be really thick, but if I read all the instructions I will increase my already through the roof anxiety xx

Hi, that's good news, when I was on the gel I put this on in the morning and take the progesterone every night before bed. You can put the gel on any time really what ever suits you xx

Thanks Butterfly - would you start the estrogel a few days before the progesterone or start them together?

Hi Lucyjo

Glad you've got some HRT but pity you had to go privately though :(  especially as apart from the testosterone cream the other hormones are available on NHS. Also surely your gyane must have given you some guidance as to how/when to take it? I am amazed if not!! How remiss of them!

Anyhoo - if you are post-menopausal and you don't want a bleed then probably start both at once. However if you are peri-menopausal you would start with the oestrogen only for 2-3 weeks and then introduce the utrogestan for however long ( licensed dose is 12 days x 200 mg). You can still do it this way if post-meno and don't want to take the prog all the time or if you want to see how your body copes with oestrogen only.  Yes progesterone receptors are only activated in the presence of oestrogen as I understand but no problem with starting both at once.

If you  intend to take both all the time ie no bleed continuous combined HRT for post-menopause, then if you started oestrogen only then your womb lining will build up a bit so when you start the prog - if you carry on without a break you might get some spotting until it settles - but you might get this anyway as spotting and bleeding is common within the first few months of taking conti HRT.

If you can make head or tail of that ramble then good luck and hope it works for you!

Thanks Hurdity, I am 56, so think I'll start them both today - otherwise I'll get in a complete mess & forget what to take & when!!
It doesn't take much to confuse me & I just get so anxious about the slightest thing! The gyn. explained but it was going over my head as usual!! Have just applied 2 pumps of gel to my arms & will take the capsule at bedtime xx

Sorry, something I forgot to ask - I didn't have any blood tests done for hormone levels - is this usual considering I paid private??

Hi, did your private meno specialist write to your gp with the diagnosis / medication? If not ask them to do so as it's important your gp knows.

Then go back to your gp and ask for the estrogel, progesterone and Vagifem medication on Nhs prescription. That is what I did, it puts money back into the Nhs rather than private pharmacies so I don't think they will protest too much. Any problems speak to the practice manager.

If you have Androfemme testosterone then this is only available privately, but the cost saving on the others will help x

Thanks Bobidy, I'm not sure what the T. is, as they said I would have to wait about 2 weeks for it to arrive. I will definitely try to get it all through NHS. Haven't had my bill for the private prescription yet!!!!!

It can be expensive as they add on dispensary charges too so brace yourself. If you are prescribed testim or testogel these are Nhs. Make sure your oestrogen levels are raised a bit first prior to starting testosterone. Maybe Hurdity could advise on that. I know I had to get the estrogel dose rightish (knock most symptoms on the head), before starting Androfemme.

Dr Newson was totally fine, in fact delighted, about me finally getting my estrogel via Nhs.

You should have to have a blood test for testosterone and SGBH levels 3 weeks after starting testosterone and then annually (I think). This can be done on the Nhs with a bit of kicking and screaming ;). I then send any results through to my private meno specialist. I don't mind paying for the care (my gps are not great re peri/meno) and the Androfemme, but not anything I can get via the Nhs as I've most certainly paid my dues over my working life!

Good luck x

I'm not sure sorry. Maybe it's reduced symptoms? Hurdity etc may be able to help with that.

Hi ladies, can I take utrogestan vaginally along with vagifem, instead of taking it orally?

Hi ladies,
Been taking duloxetine for about 2 yrs for depression & burning mouth. Do you think that now I have finally got HRT, I could come off the duloxetine??? I don't think it's helping anyway!! I know I would have to come off very slowly because of withdrawal symptoms xx
