Advice re medroxyprogesterone
« on: September 21, 2019, 10:30:52 PM »

I'm 54 and meno and have a womb. So I've been off and on diff types of HRT over the last five years but had had crippling migraines with them all. Eventually I struck gold with Oestrogel and Desogestrel (progesterone). I tried to switch to Utrogestan but couldn't even function because the migraines were so bad. So I went back to Desogesterel even though not licenced. All wonderful. At my doctors appt on Friday she said she couldn't prescribe the Desogesterel any more and has given me 10mg of medroxyprogesterone and said to take it during the last fourteen days of my cycle. I have no idea what my cycle is as I have no bleeds so she suggested finishing my current Desogesterel pack, then counting fourteen days and then taking one tablet per day for 14 days. I suspect I'll now start a bleed cycle where previously I've not had one.
So a few questions:
1. Is medroxyprogesterone the same as Provera?
2. Would this be a normal dosage and way of taking it for someone
Who hasn't had a bleed for over a year?
3 Does this progesterone have bad/good connotations ( is never heard of it)
4. I'd love to hear people's experiences of it even if they aren't great

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi yes it's Provera.

You've been given instructions for peri menopause. In post meno you take 2.5mg or 5mg every day. I think 10mg is too much but I'll check.

I've never taken it so can't comment x

Thanks Dotty. Honestly I think my doctor dips her finger in the air and just guesses 😦

Hi if you look at the treatments section on Menopause Matters then it gives you the dosages.

10mg for 14 days is for peri menopause.

For post meno it's 2.5mg or 5mg every day. I think you start on 2.5 but go up to 5 if you have bleeding.

Looks like you'll need to go back and see Doc for a different prescription 😕.

If you type Provera into the search box you'll see what others have said . Xxx

Thanks Dotty. I'm really struggling to find the treatments section. I'll have a look later. It's probably staring me in the face  :'(

Hi
I've just been prescribed Medroxyprogesterone this morning. It's to go with Oestrogel that I've been using.
How have you been doing with it? Many thanks.
