Flaxseed - alert from European Food Safety Authority.
« on: August 18, 2019, 08:43:04 AM »

Just for those who are interested, seemingly (according to the Daily Mail!!) consumption of ground Flaxseed can cause cyanide poisoning for some. As you would expect not much detail in the report & alot of comments from people who recommend it based on their health improvements.
I had been taking it daily for months on my yoghurt with fruit, stopped last week only because Flaxseed may affect the absorption of thyroxine due to it being a phyto eastrogen for those who have thyroid problems and on HRT already.

I have an unopened pack in the cupboard too!! I suppose like everything these 'headlines' need to be taken with caution and how thoroughly has it been researched etc is always the question. Up to folk to decide themselves based on benefit/risk, as with anything! x

I stopped eating flaxseed ages ago because I read it attaches to the receptors  to mimic oestrogen but then blocks the real stronger HRT. Not sure how true this is but it would make sense.

I bought some (on sale at Holland & Barrett) and ground it up and ate it on my porridge Friday. I don't know if it's coincidence but I've felt unwell ever since!!!x

Flax is a pretty blue flower grown to make linen ........ where does the cyanide come in, DH is looking up info as I type  ;D.  It also comes in a deep shade of red ....... and never grows in our garden where I want it to.  If you google 'flaxseed + Sandringham' you may come on the book about how it was grown on the Royal Estate.

If it contained it, no way would it be passed for human consumption.  I wouldn't put that daily paper under my chickens at night  :D

Sounds like much the same problem as with rice.  Most of our rice comes from Bangladesh and is contaminated with arsenic from the ground soil. It's not usually a great problem if you remember to wash the rice thoroughly before cooking (some say soak over night but that's a step to far for me).  However, I do know some countries have banned products like Baby Rice Cakes for children because they are more at risk of harm.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7367955/Scientists-warn-superfood-porridge-topping-flaxseed-cause-cyanide-poisoning.html

This is the Daily Wail report.  As per usual with them there is no link to the ACTUAL report and then it talks mainly about the affect on small children.

Personally I would take it with a pinch of salt as I can find nothing current anywhere else.

Cyanide and Arsenic are, of course, 'natural'  ;)
