Why do you not want to try the Mirena? If you would rather discuss other options i would go back and see first GP and ask him to refer.

Hi Jessie, where are you in the menopause? Age? Do you still have a regular cycle?

You don't have to have a Mirena coil. I wouldn't want one either.

You should tell your gp that you don't want the Mirena coil and ask to be referred for a scan as the other ladies have said.

Are you in pain with the fibroids? They will decrease as your estrogen declines. Bear in mind though, hrt causes them to grow.

Let us know how you get on and what is suggested next!

I personally think the Mirena is great, but not everyone has a positive experience and you shouldn't be bullied into it, you are in danger of anaemia with that amount of bleeding. How many GPs are in your practice, i would try a few others, at my practice my name GP was useless so i went with another.

Some ladies find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.

Your GP doesn't seem 'up' on menopause!  Is there a Practice Nurse you could chat with to find out the over-all treatment of menopausal women in your area?  She may have more time than a GP - ours do an annual Well Woman-type clinic for blood pressure, weight, general health chat.  Is there a GP in your surgery interested in women's health, it should say on the Surgery web-site.

Did the GP refuse to send you for a referral?

Hi jessiew, I didn't want the mirena either. I'm on my second regime of HRT, oestrogen patch & oral progesterone (daily). The GP I have been seeing latterly is honest & admits menopause is not his speciality, I continue to go to him as he listens & genuinely seems to care which I need after 3 yrs of seeing different specialists all to come back to diagnosis of peri that I had suspected myself at the start!! Anyway although this GP is not up on menopause treatments each time I have been to him he has with my knowledge emailed the local gyae/meno specialist for advice & to ask if what I am requesting is correct (based on my reading here & elsewhere). Always quick in getting a response and so far this current HRT is working for me (sleep/insomnia much improved). I agree with what CLKD has suggested also see if there are any menopause groups or cafe's locally, I attended a group and it was amazing (I'm in Scotland). If you look on the rockmymenopause website they have a good diary you can print of (I used it), I find it gives you a picture of what your symptoms are like, if there is a pattern (sometimes there isn't) & it is helpful to discuss with GP/nurse the impact on you etc. Also look at your general lifestyle is there anything you could do yourself to improve your symptoms, diet, weight loss, exercise, supplements etc as I believe it is not just one thing that will work, it takes some tweeks here and there! x
