POST BREAST CANCER SURGERY UPDATE
« on: May 02, 2019, 02:48:58 PM »

Just dropping in to give an update and a thank you to all that responded to my post about being diagnosed with breast cancer in left breast.  Surgery was last Wednesday, so I'm a week on.  Lumpectomy day case and back in my own bed on the night.  Sentinel lymph nodes taken to double check all ok.  I see breast surgeon 7th May for biopsy results.

I have also had a long conversation by phone with my menopause specialist consultant regarding my discontinuation altogether of HRT and the alternatives...anti depressants and perhaps acupuncture.  From being very resistant to coming off my HRT after being on it so long (16 years), I really have no choice now but to wean off completely.  She explained that my new HRT did not necessarily cause my breast cancer, other factors age, genetics, family history are also contributory factors but, I'm sure the new regime, albeit it made me feel fabulous, I am sure it has caused a trigger and the cancerous lump to grow.  In 16 years of using Prempak C, not one scare or lump or anything.  I told her psychologically I am struggling but that will be a combination of weaning off HRT and post surgery reality setting in. Once I get anti depressants she said they will help with anxiety and low mood.  I still have to endure radiotherapy for, I think, 3 weeks beginning June.  She did say she would help me anyway she could, and her door was always open.  She's summarising our conversation in a letter to me and GP.  Its brought me comfort that she will continue to help and support if necessary.

I still struggling coming to terms with it all.  I'm taking each stage as it comes and the next stage is seeing breast surgeon again for biopsy results next Tuesday and commencement of further treatment, radiotherapy and tamoxifen.

Thanks again for everyones support.  I'll post updates when I have the energy.

Thanks.   :foryou:  I worried that anxiety would stop me going to my daily radiotherapy sessions but it wasn't a problem.  4 mins. under the rays; it took longer to get undressed  ::)

I expect you will see the Surgeon for the results B4 beginning radiation.  That gives the area time to heal, inside and out.  I woke with a single thread across the breast, did you? with a plastic bead at each end  :D.

I had a bone scan followed by seeing the Radiologist who would do the treatment.  I was given the option of a blue mark or a small black tattoo under the skin.  This is to line up the beams exactly in the same area each time.   I opted for the black tattoos: the blue marker pen would wash off apparently which meant no bath, tragedy! : and thought I would look at them every night in the bath and thinks "I've had cancer treatment."  Nope.

It was so long ago that I took my own tape cassette with me to listen to whilst laying still.  The technicians were on a balcony behind glass looking down so I was in contact all the while.  It was a hot summer so the treatment room was the coolest place to be !  I was nervous the 1st time but the next day it was like I'd done it for weeks, 5 week days and a break.  One day the machine broke down so I had to lop a day on ........  ::)

The area did get slightly sun-burnt for which I was given a steroid cream but told 2 use the smallest amount in order to ease any soreness.  Otherwise no problems.  Some ladies get tired.  I put that down to the intense heat, travelling to and from the treatment sessions as well as working part time all the way through.

If there is an alternative to Tamoxifen then go for that.  The drug comes with it's own problems so make sure that you discuss the options, make notes.  36 hours after my 1st pill I felt like I had 'flu, complete cold flushes from the back of my neck to my waist  ::).  No one warned me about that either!

I survived.  Take half a day at a time and rest as much as you can.  I was advised to avoid the sunshine whilst undergoing treatment, to keep away from old people [that's what age exactly?] and babies until at least 4 weeks after ....... but no one could actually tell me why  :-\

Is someone cooking for you?  Washing up etc.?

Cazjen, so lovely to hear from you. I'm so glad the surgery went well. You say you are struggling to come to terms with it, which is competely understandable, but you sound pretty together right now  :)
I've had a 'liitle c' twice, in different places, both times found by accident. I consider myself lucky really.
The first time was 20 years ago and I just got on with it, the wonders of youth (I was 26). The 2nd one was in 2015 (so I was 42) and that one hit me harder emotionally. ADs can help (I'm on citalopram now for anxiety bought on by having my ovary removed 3 months ago,  but only started on them 7 weeks ago).
But I had counselling in 2015 to help me come to terms with what was going on. I'm thinking about doing it again, as I'm struggling to come to terms with having my ovary removed and the subsequent consequences.
You can self refer I think, the website address that that I got from my GP is -
www.talkingspaceplus.org.uk
Do keep chatting on here, you will get lots of support from the lovely ladies.
Best wishes. xx

What I didn't want was pain.  Well, didn't have even after surgery, soreness ....... it was after discharge from the whole palaver that I felt adrift  ::)
