BMS (mouth pain)
« on: March 09, 2019, 10:59:59 AM »

I joined the forum because of a couple of posts on this topic I found via Google, though really I'm here under false pretences as it isn't a menopause thing for me - I am beyond that, and it happened after a visit to the dentist.

I've seen numerous people and have found the medics extremely negative, which of course made things worse. It's a long story which I won't go into here, but can anyone relate? There is so little sensible information anywhere, information and opinions conflict, and no one, not even the "experts", really understands it.

Hi Kalinka

Mouth pain/BMS appeared for me with menopause and my dentist recommended that I get my iron levels checked. Although not anaemic my tests showed low ferritin levels and the doc prescribed me iron supplements which helped with the mouth pain.

After that I started taking HRT (for other menopause issues) and that also made a difference to the mouth pain, it's much more under control now.

So, ask your doc for iron/ ferritin test  :)

I had a blood test for iron and B12 at the dentist's suggestion - that was four years ago - and it came back "normal." But I've recently started using Better You Iron spray and their B12 one. My dental hygienist is convinced that I'm anaemic as my mouth is pale.

But as I'm 65, could it really be a menopausal symptom? It definitely followed a dental treatment.

At a group session I had to go to at hospital (this was awful as it was so negative). they said that it could be caused by hormone imbalance but putting that right wouldnt help. Also that it could be caused by a nutritional deficiency but putting that right wouldn't help. Which I thought were very odd things to say!! This was at the supposedly very best hospital  for this condition.

Burning mouth syndrome and dry mouth can be related to menopause.  Your dentist should be able to refer you to an appropriate Clinic at the Hospital.

I find Bonjela helpful.  My Gran swore by boiled, salted, cooled water - swilled round the mouth several times a day.

Have you checked your tooth paste?  SLS [I think] affects me in that after cleaning teeth, certain foods make my tongue, cheeks, mouth - in that order, burn.  Chocolate, bananas, are particularly bad.  Butter can cause it too.

So change your toothpaste without SLS - for at least 3 months.  It made a huge difference to my mouth and if I use the 'wrong' paste, the symptoms return as soon as I eat.

I know, it's absurd. There's more sense here than hours of CBT (which I had to have and which made me feel worse) and hospital group sessions. It was also suggested that I was doing it for attention (a hypnotherapist who had never heard of the condition) and using it as an excuse (a Talking Therapies person ditto).

I do use a SLS-free toothpaste, but they often have strong flavours I can't tolerate either. I use a Lavera one with echinacea and propolis. I was also told not to use anything (lozenges, etc.) with benzoin or cinnamon.

I will try salt, but everything seems to make it feel worse, even water, when it's really bad. Sorry to go on, but it's a relief to have somewhere to vent.

Hi Kalinka. Do you use a mouthwash? I was recommended a few years ago to start using one by my dentist and had to try six different ones before I found one that did not make my mouth really sore. The other thing I cannot eat anymore is pineapple in any form. Hope you get some relief soon

I've had it for five years. It does keep me awake sometimes. I was prescribed Nortriptyline, an AD used for nerve pain, and Lidocaine ointment. The tablets didn't do anything so eventually I stopped, and the Lidocaine gives partial relief though not always (like now) and only for about 30 minutes and you can only use it four times a day.

It was at least seven months before I saw a specialist, and I couldn't get a GP appointment because they kept saying it was a dental matter - you have to say when you ring why you need to see a GP, then he speaks to you on the phone. It was only when I said that my weight had gone down to 6.5 stone that I was given a appointment. I am depressed, not surprisingly, but also have to keep pretending that I'm not.

The range of what I can eat is very limited; nothing acidic, nothing hard, nothing with a texture, no strong flavours....at one point I more or less stopped eating.

I don't use a mouthwash - even if they don't contain alcohol they all have strong flavours, which I can't tolerate!

I've now found several threads here. Thanks for all the tips and information.

Birdy, thanks for the lnks. I tried acupuncture at the beginning, but it didn't do anything. I think stress is linked. Also had reflexology for the stress angle, and Bowen Technique for the same reason. I did Mindfulness online for a year, but found no benefit - I think I didn't believe it would help so maybe that was why it didn't.

I am in the UK, CLKD.

When it's at its worse, I can't tolerate the echinacea and propolis toothpaste, so I've now started using one with no taste at all. I think sometimes you can start to react to something that you've been ok with for a long time.

I have tried CBD oil, but with no effect, but perhaps wasn't taking enough. I know that a lot of people find it very helpful.

My name comes from a Russian song we learned at school!! It just came into my head for some reason as I was trying to think of a username. Strange the things that float into your  mind.

Anyway, I now have a list of things to try. If only I'd found this website five years ago. The mssage at the hospital was: Nothing works - no use doing anything. Although the medical doctors were quite encouraging and it was the psychology side of things that made it seem hopeless.
