No support from GP
« on: August 22, 2018, 06:10:13 PM »

Hi there, just wondered if anyone else has breast cancer history and is not getting support from GP?
I have seen a menopause specialist gynaecologist who has prescribed me oestrogel and progesterone oral tablets 7 days a month. He was not concerned at all re my breast cancer history as he said the risk is so very small.
I went to him in the first place because my GP was delaying any prescription. She sent me off to see breast clinic and then wait for more info etc. That all took months. I had an appointment with her to discuss what the gyaenocologist has prescribed me and she just shook her head and said that he is being paid. I asked if she would prescribe his prescription in future and she said that she will not ever prescribe me hrt. She told me it would fuel breast cancer.

This means I have to make long journeys every 3 months to get a prescription from the specialist.
Apart from this, it has left me in confusion as to whether she is right and I am being silly taking hrt with breast cancer history.
My hot flushes have really calmed down just a week after taking the gel. I even am using just one pump instead of the 2 i was prescribed and it's definitely making a real change.
Does anyone else out there have breast cancer history and a gp that is totally against hrt in this case?

Hi Jari, my situation isn't quite the same as yours but I thought I'd reply just to try and give some support. I had breast cancer two years ago, followed by the onset of horrendous menopausal symptoms due to chemotherapy. I haven't had any trouble getting HRT prescribed as my cancer was triple negative, so not hormonally driven, but my GP just had no knowledge or interest in the menopause whatsoever. She was happy to prescribe whatever the private specialist I paid for recommended, but refused to refer me to an NHS specialist. To cut a long story short I've finally had the sense to change GP, and found someone else in the same practice who is clued up and sympathetic and has referred me to a consultant gynaecologist. Change GPs - you have a right to appropriate treatment, and personally I think quality of life comes in way ahead of a small risk of breast cancer recurrence, who wants to live a long miserable life?

How dare she treat you like that Jari! I presume she is pre menopausal. Her time will come.  :diablo:
Do some homework, especially the NICE guidelines, and explain to her that you understand the risks, but that you want quality of life now! Possibly even complain to the practice manager or change GPs.
I'm sure other more knowledgeable ladies will advise you too.
