Shoulder pain and gym membership
« on: February 24, 2018, 06:48:22 PM »

Hi everyone,

Anyone had problems with Dr and gym membership ?

I've been having problems with my shoulder/neck for quite some time but decided
it was time I got more active and went see about joining a gym, mainly to use the
tread mill and pool ( I checked with my dr first )

I was told at the gym that I would need a certificate from my Dr and was very surprised when he refused to even consider it.......not on medical grounds but on principle
( my words not his )

Anyone else had this happen?

Nothing like that. I have neck and shoulder tension  but never told them about it at the gym.

Many Gym Companies have specialised health advisors.  If one has a pre-condition it stands to reason that they would require a Certificate from your GP if you've undergone treatment.

I would suggest that you self refer to a physio for advice on movement.  Frozen shoulder-type symptoms are common as we age.  There are specific treatments which can ease the problem.

Maybe the Gym would accept communication with a physio.?   GPs don't have to hand out certificates and most have a charge for those that are essential.

Thank you for all your replies.

I've decided to go back to the gym and have another chat about a possible
ways forward. I saw physio initially , might be worth having another chat to her,
thank you for that suggestion CKLD
