Newbie from the new forest
« on: October 25, 2017, 06:01:44 PM »

Hi I am 53,  have been having stomach aches for over a year, was worried about going to the doctors so kept putting it off til last month. I had a 3 year smear test and the nurse suggested I see the doctor as I had high blood pressure, not sleeping and was getting irritable. Whilst waiting for docs appointment he called to request that I had blood test and and take in a urine sample. Blood test and urine samples were fine, then he requested that I have more blood tests to find out if I was menapausal or not, came back that I was. I have also been and had a scan on my stomach nothing has showed apart from that I have a small bladder.
Doctor won't give me HRT as my sister is awaiting a gene testing results after a double mastectomy in June, will have to wait another 8 weeks.
Doctor has prescribed me citalopram 10mg for hot flushes.
Sorry for the long post

It will be interesting to see what is suggested for you, regardless of your sister's results.  In the mean time, maybe keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart how you feel.  Browse round.

Was the scan done with full bladder then bladder emptied?  If you have bladder problems, regardless - you should be able to use a suitable vaginal atrophy treatment cream as the likelihood of it seeping into the body enough to cause cancer if low.  I use Ovestin1mg successfully, the idea is to use every night for 2 weeks then 'as necessary', though it is often enough every 3rd and 7th night ........ -ish.

Browse round.

Thank you for your reply.

My scan was first with full bladder, then had internal scan after I spent a penny or two!

That's good that it was done that way.

Maybe think about which symptom you would like to sort first?  Read the treatments banner in green above.  Make notes.

Hi Amanda

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your sister. The situation re close relatives and your own risk of breast cancer is quite complex - but depending on the outcome of her results you might be able to ask for a referral to a specialist to assess your own risk and also whether HRT might be possible? I presume this is what you are waiting for?

Whereabouts in menopause are you in relation to cycles ie how often are your periods, have you skipped any, are they heavier, lighter etc?

In the meantime you can help to lower your blood pressure through the following measures ( if you need to): losing weight, taking more exercise, cutting out smoking, reducing alcohol and salt intake amongst other things. These, along with adopting a very healthy diet (lots of fruit and veg amongst other foods, less refined food and sugar, and fewer carbs and unhealthy fats !) will also help to reduce your risk of many cancers.

I hope the medication works to reduce your flushes while you are waiting for the results.
