Lightheaded, "fuzzy" feeling inside my head
« on: September 23, 2017, 07:48:45 PM »

Hello all,

This is my first time posting.  I am 46 years old and have been having mild peri symptoms for the past few years.  About 5 months ago, things really changed.

Periods went wacky...long, short, heavy, light, etc.  Anything but normal. Also had my first set of hot flashes that lasted about a week - wow those were miserable.  Haven't had any since (that was about 2 months ago.  Migraines/tension headaches are off the charts.

But the weirdest symptoms that has me feeling very uneasy is this weird feeling inside my head.  It has been happening on/off for the past 6 weeks (mostly on).  The best way I can describe it is a fuzzy, weird feeling inside my head.  It's like being lightheaded, where I feel almost drunk.  Sometimes I feel a tightening around the outside.  I did have a few dizzy spells where the room was spinning, but that stopped at the beginning and now it's just the weird feeling.

I really hate it because it feel so bizarre.  I feel like I could faint, but know I won't.  Like my head is floating.  It's very hard to explain.  And of course, it makes me feel anxious, with worries of cancer, etc., even though I know it's likely not.

I am seeing my neuro next month and will mention it to her, but I was wondering if it might be peri related.  Anyone else have this?

Thanks!
Jane

I've had this weird head feeling too. The only way I can describe it is, as a feeling of being off balance and lightheadness, but I can have it not only when I am standing but sitting as well. It's a very strange sensation. I haven't had the room spinning feeling but I do get occasional dizziness. I too am in the throes of peri x

I have had a couple of bouts of a shifting sensation, almost like rocking on a boat. It was worse when I lay down at night. I had it for about 8 weeks in total and the GP thought it was an inner ear virus and told me it would eventually go ( it did). I have had it a few times on and off since and asked the GP again and he mentioned Meniers? or a thinning of hair in the inner ear which can effect your sensation of balance and can come on in your 40s or 50s.  He said it would go and it did. So maybe just mention it to your GP and he can check your ears and balance.

'shifting sensation' - a really good expression.

For years I've had funny sensations whilst walking, I go to put feet to the floor and my thighs feel weak so I don't step where I think I was going to  ::) as well as moving my head and feeling odd, enough to make me go "OH!" but it's gone in that instant.  I do have a nerve in the back of my neck that causes odd feelings.  I also feel fuzzy due to a mix of medication which took a while to get used to.  'hung over' sometimes without a reason  >:(  ::)

HORMONES  >:(  ???

Thank you all so much for your replies.  At least I know I'm not alone.  I was googling what meds to help alleviate that dizzy feeling, and Valium came up.  I just so happen to have a bottle of those from my urologist (for interstitial cystitis flares).  Well, strangely enough, I took 5mg yesterday afternoon and within 45 min, the feeling was gone.  Problem is, I don't want to take Valium every day, so I'm hoping it will start to go away.

Thanks again - you all helped me so much,

Valium is used as a relaxant for people with severe low back pain or as a sedative prior to surgical intervention.  Not to be used daily but at least you know that it is unlikely to be anything 'serious' ;-)

Hi Jane
I know exactly the feeling inside your head that you are talking about as I have been suffering with this too since last year when I was 46. I was initially diagnosed with vertigo and when it didn't clear up I was referred to an ENT who ruled out vertigo. I then saw a neurologist who diagnosed chronic migraine because I had a constant headache along with the shifting/floating/tugging/dizzy feelings inside my head (note you can have "silent"  migraine i.e. dizzy, shifting feeling, floaty, strained eyes etc BUT no head pain). I was shocked it as I don't have a prior headache or migraine history.  I have been completely floored with the symptoms and unable to work or drive for the last year. I tried a number of meds from the neuro all of which had terrible side effects. Thanks to this forum I was able to figure out that even tho I had these symptoms every day there were days in the month that the headaches and floaty/dizzy/foggy feeling were much worse - these days were days 2-6, 10-14, 20/21 and 25/26 of my cycle. After 1 full year of misery I was finally able to find a meno specialist who was able to tell me that my headaches and weird head feelings are due to fluctuating hormones in the perimenopause and she has started me on a HRT regime (if I wasn't a smoker she would have put me on the contraceptive pill to stop the hormone fluctuations).
I suggest that you keep a daily diary of your symptoms to see if your worst days/symptoms are on key days in your cycle and if a pattern emerges you could ask the posters here to recommend a meno specialist near you who could help. I wasted time and money going to 2 x gynaes and an endocrinologist who were actually useless - if your symptoms are hormone related it's a meno specialist who will have the expertise to help you.
