I was told that I would need a smear test every six months by the gynocologist after he told me that I could not take progesterone any more. This was clarified by my GP and also the endrocologist who I was sent to by the GP because we thought I might have an issue with my thyroid The endrocologist said to me he would not let his wife to take that risk so felt that was enough for me not to go down that route.

Hi Barney - I presume you mean a scan not a smear? Fairly frequent scans of the uterus are necessary if you do not take progesterone but a smear would not be necessary and the cervix unaffected by the HRT regime. Re the risk - exactly - there is a sight risk of endometrial cancer if you do not take progesterone as part of HRT and if you still have a uterus - hence the need for womb scans (to test endometrial thickness and assess for abnormalities).

I was told a smear test The specialist told me that they would need to check the cervix to make sure  that no pre cancerous cells had started to grow I had this confirmed by my doctor and also the endrocologist  I would have also had to have scan to check the thickness of my womb It was rather scary and I personally  decided that for me this was not a away forward.I have meet someone who was in the same predicament as me who took that risk for two years and finished up having to have major surgery She told me not to go down that route It's all about choice and though I have had a terrible menopause I now can see some light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
