Strange sensations all over body
« on: January 31, 2017, 04:10:07 AM »

Hi my name is Carol,

Ive only just joined and dont know where to post my introduction. I am 59, last year i had my gallbladder removed shortly after op i started having strange feeling in belly like i have butterflys. Twitching muscles, nerves popping. Dr said its anxiety which made me feel more anxious as time went by.
After having had various tests and mri, cat scan, ultrasound which all came back ok, the only abnormal was hormone test showed 1 progesterone and 72 eostrogen. Im thinking all these odd feelings are menopause related, i had hysterectomy in 2011 since then have had hot flashes, bit of dizzyness. Now anxiety depression, feeling like insects running over my skin, sweating, shaking, ive lost 16 kilos lol thats a good thing coz i was plump, plump but happy! Ive had cfs for many years so its hard not knowing whats going on. Drs put me on prozac, im just a mess. Has anyone had experience with belly flutters, anxiety. I appreciate any advice, comments please.

Hi Carol.

CFS can cause different sensations but it is difficult to tell what is making you "flutter". I have found these comments which may be helpful in at least letting you know you are not alone. Sorry if you have already found it yourself http://ehealthforum.com/health/topic47381.html

The feeling of insects running over your skin is often menopause related and is called Formication. http://healthyskinclinic.com.au/skin-news/itchy-skin-formication-and-menopause/  Hope that this helps. It is a very annoying condition. I had skin tingling and a certain amount of formication but it disappears when I am on HRT.

Hello Cazzie57 and welcome to the forum.

I am one of the women who has the butterfly feeling in my stomach/chest/bowels. I've seen it described as jittering, trembling, internal shaking and even as if a mobile phone had been swallowed and was stuck on vibrate. My meno book talks about this as well and says it is a common symptom. You have my sympathy as it is a very unnerving sensation and contributes to any anxiety. When this occurs I try to breathe deeply and ride it out.

Menopause is a tough journey for some of us but at least we have each other!

Take care and keep posting.

Thank you so very much, finally someone has actually read of the fluttering in a book confirming that menopause can cause this! Why dont Drs know this?

I had a hysterectomy in 2011 ovaries left, so its taken me a while to reach the stage where my hormones are out of whack. Dr suggested a HRT with more estrogen but my tests show no progesterone, i would think id need progesterone more than the other? I am on prozac now as my anxiety has been so bad, never felt like this before, its awful.

I thank you again and hope your are kepping well!🌺

Hi Sparkle,

You do sound very much like me! Amazing isnt it how our bodies let us down, then the mind starts to play tricks. In the mean time we all try to find answers, cures, but i think what makes the difference is a good support system. This allows us to talk to people who are going through the same issues, my friends dont have my problems. I know they try to be helpful, i dont tell them just how awful it all is.
Im forcing myself to go out but its a huge effort! Even my daughter says snap out of it!
Thank you for replying, i hope we can say hello now and then?

Cheers🌷

I get a fluttery feeling behind my belly button, what's all *that* about!  Adrenaline can feel like hot water coursing through my veins, not in any particular direction but it scared me initially.  Now I recognise that it will pass.

Yes yes yes. have u had your b12 tested. it can contribute to these feelings if low or u have pernicious anaemia? bit I agree I think its hormones but removal of gallbladder can lead to b12 deficiency. Its all horrible.  Like too much caffeine sometimes? The fluttering and internal shaking. I hate hormones. big hugs xx

Hi there, Please keep posting, because you're making me feel sane too. I'm peri-menopausal and have suffered gastric problems. My main symptoms now, though are a constant feeling of a lump in my throat which causes me to want to clear my throat all the time, and strange sensations all over my body. For me, I get a combination of slight numbness, tingling, tremors in my hands and muscle twitching. I am also on medication for bouts of dizziness. I've been on HRT (2mg Elleste Duet) for the past couple of months and the worst of the insomnia and adrenaline rushes/anxiety has settled down with that. I can now almost live a normal life around my symptoms. I say that its nearly a normal life because I'm lucky enough to be self-employed. I can pick and choose when and how I do my work. Evenings and early mornings are the worst times for me, so I have to concentrate my work in a shorter time. I'm also nervous about taking on any work that means travelling as I'm still not fully on top of the dizziness and anxiety attacks. Glad to know I'm not alone. It's really scary.

Hi Kathleen - does your meno book explain what is actually happening inside to cause the fluttering/trembling? Somehow it would help if I could understand what is physically going on. I have seen loads of doctors and specialists and they have all looked at me like I am mad when I have mentioned I have this. No-one seems to have heard of it.

Max4, these could be thyroid symptoms. Have a Google online. Gps are not always very helpful. Even if your levels are normal you might need further blood tests ie full thyroid panel, thyroid antibodies. My friend has had a lot of weird symptoms and thyroid issues are not recognised by western medicine until your thyroid has stopped working altogether.

Hi Maxplus4 - just to note the lump in throat feeling can be caused by other things, including thyroid probs.  This and other symptoms can also be related to vitamin deficiencies such as low ferritin, B12 or folate.  I had these symptoms despite being on patches and found my ferritin had been bumping along the bottom of the range for years.  I started taking iron supplements and most of the symptoms cleared within 5 - 12 weeks.  Look up Low Iron without Anaemia for more info.
The problem is of course, being 'ladies of a certain age' - everything is attributed to the menopause, when the reality is often a combination of factors.  :)
