Morning
« on: November 14, 2016, 11:48:46 AM »

Just wanted to introduce myself, I started HRT three months ago, my hand was really forced as I discovered I have  severe osteoporosis at 51, I want to try this first before I wade towards bisphosphanates.
The best part of HRT for me has been seeing all my new found anxiety dissolve, I was turning into a nervous wreck.

Bravo Charlotte… - welcome to MM
HRT is magic stuff and is join to really help your bones. Hope it continues well for you.
I expect you are trying to do some appropriate exercise to improve bones density as well and upping your calcium Vitamin D and magnesium?  DG x

Hello and welcome!

In similar situation to you. On the HRT now and feeling good. Osteo in the spine. There's so many options out there now for treating osteo, it's fully reversible. I'm going to go HRT route regardless of bone status, but DEXA in a year and if not significant improvement will probably go for the reversal jab - Prolia. But may not given potential side effects. Will see in a year!

CJMCA, my thoughts are similar to yours, try HRT for a year and then see where I am. Good luck!

Hi Charlotte... (wondered about the dots?!!)

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your osteoporosis - I presume you had a very early menopause and your periods stopped some time ago, and you were not given HRT before? Good that you've started it now - what type/dose have you been given? Glad also to hear that it has helped your anxiety - this is often caused by low oestrogen.

Do let us know how you get on re HRT and osteoporosis in future.

Hi Hurdity,
So many other Charlottes and wanted to hang onto this name  ::)
No I didn't have an early menopause, no obvious reason for the osteoporosis other than being a small fry. Yes, I'll see what my DEXA scan shows in a year or tow and regroup from there.

I'm the same age and same stage as you, my anxiety was day long, ( though intermittent)  all I know is that it has drifted away since I started HRT three months ago, by itself that wouldn't have been enough for me to decide to start HRT but I have severe osteoporosis.

Cjmca What makes you say Osteoporosis is fully reversible?
My spine score at -3.3 seems to alarm both specialists I have seen. They do not approve of my plan to improve weight bearing exercise, calcium , vitamins and minerals in diet.
Their only response has been Alendronic Acid which I don't feel builds good bones. At 56 slim and healthy I feel I can do that.
I now find myself looking into HRT to give my bones an oestrogen boost.

Hi Helenjane

 :welcomemm:

It might be better for you to start your own thread in the new members area so that you get more responses but I will answer you here!!

When you say you have been menopausal for a long time what have your periods been doing over the past 12 months or so - or at all - have you been skipping them at all and is your cycle very irregular? If so and you are getting flushes as well as the anxiety - the NICE Guidelines produced a year ago state that your doctor should not be prescribing you Fluoxetine - and s/he is out of date to consider this. The first line of treatment for women in your position is HRT - so do ask for this! Look at the different preparations at the top tabs ( TREATMENTS/HRT  preparations and see what's on offer - there are tablets, or  patches (and gel oestrogen and progesterone). Femoston is a good one to start with as many women tolerate it quite well. The oestrogen should help with your anxiety - but of course you will still expect a bit of pmt once a month and a regular bleed.

Do ask any more questions - and it will come to an end - HRT should improve your quality of life so t hat you don't feel so rough :)

If your symptoms Helenjane are hormonal then maybe HRT is the way to go.  However, as someone who has suffered with depression since 1998 and anxiety since the age of 3, anti-depressant medication as well as a beta-blocka has eased those symptoms.

Maybe keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart how you feel ?  That way you can see if your mood/anxiety dips at all which may be a pointer to discuss with your GP?
