Hello :)
« on: October 22, 2016, 04:54:01 PM »

Hi everyone it's my big 60 next year (where does the time go).  I'm in my menopause, it started early (had my thyroid out in my 30s), no periods since then.  It didn't quite kick off properly and now I find myself yep...in menopause.

Let's see, I have hot flushes, dizzy spells, very bad mood swings, anxiety (always had that in one way or another)and no sex drive.  I've tried HRT twice.  The first time it gave me very bad stomach ache, the second time about 18 cysts in one breast which could turn cancerous.  Suffice it to say I came off HRT straight away.  I've tried evening primrose oil which helped a little bit but other than that I'm trying to cope with this on my own.

Anyways, nice to meet you all :)

Hi and welcome TheQuietOne

You've had a tough time.  Do look under TREATMENTS above as there are non hormonal prescription options that could be worth trying.  My gynae recommends SRRIs like Citalopram for controlling flushes and low mood etc. but it can be trial and error before finding the right AD/SRRI but many women do really well on these.
Lifestyle is crucial when trying to cope without HRT.  I'm 60 now, had an early meno, so had HRT for many years. I stopped HRT about 4 months ago because I was fed up with the side effects and I take Vitamin D3, Omega 3, magnesium, and now also St John's Wort, and I'm finding these helpful in many ways although nothing controls flushes like oestrogen.  I do Mindful Meditation on the recommendation of my GP which I find great and I do a lot of brisk walking.  Basically I have adjusted my life in many ways to cope with the meno symptoms.  Keep posting DG x

Were you checked by ultrasound and were the cysts painful/squidgy/removed?  If they were likely 'to turn cancerous' then they should not have been left in situ.  My Surgeon told me that a healthy breast has no lumps in it.   My breast lump [1995] was oestrogen dominant but I would ask for HRT if I suffered symptoms.  Quality of Life is important.  That bus might be along well B4 cancer!

Do re-consider HRT and browse round the alternative threads.  There are several options, not all will be likely to 'trigger' breast problems.  Jot down your worst symptoms and decide which you want to tackle first?

Let us know how you get on!  Browse round.  Ask ………

Welcome to MM!

Sorry to hear about the difficult time you have had.  Regarding breast cysts, they are extremely common and women can have them for years without knowing about them and many didn't show up well on old fashioned mammogram equipment - some have only become easy to detect more recently with more modern ultrasound equipment.  I have had them in the past and always have an ultrasound straight after a mammogram and the specialist said that in his entire career, he has never seen a breast cyst turn into a malignancy.  He said there are benign breast lumps that can turn malignant but they are not breast cysts (they have another name which I can't remember) and as CLKD says, if lumps are at all suspicious, they should always be removed immediately.

So before deciding whether or not to take HRT, I would double check exactly what type of breast lumps you have because breast cysts are harmless and just sacs filled with liquid and no reason to avoid HRT.

I hope that helps.

Hi, I saw this post today having just joined this forum.  I mentioned in my intro post about some of the symptoms I have had, particularly acid reflux, aches and pains etc and completely forget to mention the breast cysts I keep getting. I have had them for about 4 years and I get them checked at the hospital where they are absolutely brilliant and understanding. The last one was drained last week and the doctor said that hopefully I wouldn't get many more but was so surprised I was still having regular periods (I'm nearly 54).  Well they are spreading out in occurring now so maybe that's a good sign! :)
