Mirena coil bleeding
« on: October 08, 2016, 07:48:13 PM »

Hi ladies,
Not posted for a while but was wondering if it is ok to bleed with a mirena coil. I had one fitted in February after having really heavy periods and am 58yrs old and today have started with light bleeding after not having had any since coil was fitted.
Many thanks for helping,
Kim x

The occasional light bleed is not unusual.  If you look under TREATMENTS at the top of this page is does state that the Mirena doesn't always stop all bleeds.  How much oestrogen are you using per day? Can you still feel the strings?  Sometimes the Mirena can fall out? If you can feel the strings then it's probably just a slight breakthrough bleed that will stop soon. If the bleed continues for more than a week or becomes quite heavy then I'd get this checked at the GPs. DG x

I think you can get ulceration/ bleeding of the endometrium if you have a mirena and no added estrogen when you are post menopause.
Not sure if you are post meno though.

Tinkerbell could well be right. If your oestrogen levels have dropped then the Mirena may be thinning the womb lining too much now and you may need some oestrogen.  It could be worth getting your oestrogen levels checked and possibly either adding in some oestrogen as Oestrogel or patch or you could have the Mirena removed if you are not getting any real meno symptoms e.g. flushes etc.
A scan may be good idea as well just to check what is going on.  To still get bleeding at 58 is unusual.  DG x

Yes I agree with DG I think you need to speak to your GP and get it check out.

However if you were having really heavy periods up until February when you were either 57 or 58 - this in itself is unusual, more than the bleeding after fitting the Mirena. More to the point did you have the heavy bleeding fully checked out before you had the Mirena fitted, to rule out any pathological reason for the bleeding - eg fibroids, polyps, hyperplasia etc, rather than just very late menopause?

If everything was OK prior to starting the Mirena it is hard to say what the reason is for the bleeding without getting checked out so at your age I would definitely go to the doc to see whether in fact the lining has now thinned too much as Tinkerbell suggest (as you have had progestogen only for a long time). If you were having regular periods up until fitting the Mirnea then your own oestrogen should not have dropped very low as yet although I imagine it is still possible for overthinning to occur.

An indication of whether your oestrogen has dropped would be if you are getting hot flushes, night sweats etc, but if you are taking other medication eg ADs etc and some others - then you may not experience these so you wouldn't know. As Dancinggirl says replacement oestrogen may well be helpful at this point!

Defo go to the doc - and if necessary ask for a referral to a specialist!

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. I was seen by a consultant who did tests and said everything was fine and thought the mirena was the best course of action because of the heavy periods. Have been having flushes for a few years but for the past year they have been worse. For the past week they haven't been bad at all and then when I go to the loo theres blood when I wipe so not sure if theres a connection.
Thanks,
