Utrogestan orally
« on: September 06, 2016, 06:49:26 PM »

Hi I'm on day 6 of 12 Utrogestan. I take 2 X 100mg orally last thing before bed.  the problem I'm having with them is that yes they make me drowsy but they irritate my bladder terribly. Is this a side effect?  It takes around an hour for my bladder to settle after taking them and it's just exhausting me!  Is anyone else suffering from this?

I have spoken to my specialist and she said that progesterone is a diuretic. I have a sensitive bladder at the best of times  :-\

I needed to get up at least twice a night for the loo when I used utrogestan vaginally.....it is very rare for me to need the loo in the night. One of the reasons I abandoned utrogestan and opted for the Mirena.

I take mine an hour or two before bed so I don't get up in the night. Although sometimes I still do

I use 100mg days 1-25

Specialist says it gets rid of water retention that the Estrogen stores.  My problem is I have a week bladder best of times. With Utrogestan for me is like drinking 2ltrs water in one go. The pills make me tired but can't sleep as bursting for the loo!

What time do you take yours? Don't you have to take on an empty stomach? I'm not taking mine till 10pm and don't end up settled to sleep till nearly midnight zzzzzzz

I take 100mg orally every night 1 hr before bed and usually sleep 7 + hrs.  I have little to no bladder problems with a 50 mg patch.  If I lower to 35mg patch, my bladder is irritated and burns. When I took 200mg orally, my bladder was irritated and burned with the 50 mg patch and 75mg patch. Thus I think it is a problem of progesterone/estrogen balance. It is true that progesterone is a diuretic, but if your estrogen is too low for the progesterone you are taking, it sort of feels like cystitis rather than just needing to urinate more often. You need estrogen to keep both the vaginal and bladder/urethral mucosa thick. Proesterone can apparently bind to estrogen receptors (and block them??) or so I was told a while back, so you don't want progesterone to get too high if you are in menopause and if you use low to medium estrogen doses, but need it high enough to prevent endometrial thickening....it can be a conundrum! ;)

If you are perimenopausal this may not be the case for your issues.

Hi DEG - if you are taking 200 mg x 12 days then that is the licensed dose of utrogestan. It needs to be at a high dose because so much is lost in the digestive system and metabolised in the liver - so to ensure that sufficient gets to the uterus where it is needed. Unfortunately the licensed dosage is a one-size fits all - which is a nonsense since we vary individually and also take different oestrogen doses.

You are taking a medium sized oestrogen dose so personally I would use the licensed amount if you can - at least initially - until you know how much of it you absorb. However as the others have said limited research shows that used vaginally less progesterone is needed so you could try 100 mg vaginally for the same length of time (12 days). However I would mention this to your doctor to request a scan after 6 months - a year - to ensure you monitor your womb lining for signs of thickening and check you are OK on this dose. Vaginal use is not licensed in this country for HRT although it is for fertility treatment, and for HRT on the continent.

Hope it all works out for you.

I use in via the chacha and I don't go to the toilet any more than I did previously. It just makes me feel more comfy (well first five days do).  I pee more when I'm on my period.

Hi, yes I am having the same problem... done four months of daily 100mg utrogestin, 50mcg patches of Estradot and 5 vagifem per week. My bladder has worsened considerably, with urgency and a feeling of irritation, leaving me having to drink lots of water, and D-mannose etc. I have got an emergency appointment with the specialist on Monday morning, as I can't take any more of it and would rather try suffering a bleed or take out the systemic altogether, although I have suffered vaginal atrophy.  Your post is interesting, as it confirms my suspicions that it might be the progesterone.  xx

Sap 22---

Try less vagifem....you may not need that much on 50 patch, usually that much is used by women who aren't on HRT.

In fact, I would stop it for a week and see if you get any better. You might check for yeast that can occur with stinging, burning and absence of the typical white discharge. Since the bladder and vagina form together, sensations are similar and sometimes it is hard to tell which is the problem.

The usual dose of vagifem is 2x weekly although admittedly, some women do need more.
