Need hot flush respite!
« on: May 10, 2016, 11:03:35 AM »

Hi.
I've not posted on here for a while as difficult life situations have got in the way and I'd more or less resigned myself to my hot flushes/sweats.
I've had these brutes for nearly ten years now and am at my wits end with them..... I want to try and find a natural way that will at least diminish them a little?
I cannot take hrt as I've had dvt's in the past. I've now just started on Sertraline to help with my huge anxiety/ agitation but would like to try and tackle my sweats again. ( if that's possible)
Thank you for any advice or tips.

Other antidepressants such as Effexor are better suited to helping with hot flashes so maybe consider switching to that? Some doctors will prescribe clonidine a blood pressure medication to help with flushes but not sure if that is ok given you've has dvts- worth asking though. Otherwise stuff like meditation and relaxation and paced breathing can help. They are rotten things and you have my sympathy. Mine go in cycles and are bad at minute with it being warm xx

Yep, I am on the sister drug, escitalopram and my hot flushes completely went for a while.  They've returned a bit but nothing like they were.  It is now 7 years since I had my first one.

However I would swap anxiety for hot flushes any day.

Thanks again for the replies. I've been told not to take venlafaxine (Effexor) because of my cardiovascular problems.
I've recently been on citalopram, for a few years actually, but they did nothing re my hot sweats and agitation.
This is why I've been trying to supplement with something else natural.
I must look through all the posts on this but I get so agitated doing so, lol, particularly when my iPad 'freezes'.

I don't think the "natural" remedies (as in herbal ones -  they are still produced in a lab/factory) actual work for hot flushes and some are not advised to be used long term.

The most promising ones I think are red clover which acts like a very weak oestrogen although the evidence is mixed I think.

As has been said the ones that work are the prescribed drugs - and they are all listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/prescribed.php

and has also been said they are meant for other conditions than flushes but seem to work on these too.

Here is what it says on this site about DVT and HRT - perhpas you can ask to be referred to a specialist?

Thrombosis
Since HRT is associated with a small increased risk of venous thrombosis, care must be taken when considering HRT use in women with a past or family history of thrombosis. Depending on the indication for HRT and on the cause of the thrombosis, risks and benefits should be assessed. If HRT is to be used, preference would usually be given to the transdermal route (patch or gel) [ref 22]. Specialist advice should be requested. Vaginal estrogen may be used for treatment of vaginal and bladder symptoms.

As always - looking at diet, exercise, body weight, lifestyle etc can help you cope with the symptoms of menopause and will put you in better shape for the years to come.

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply Hurdity. I shall take a look at the suggestions.
I wonder if my flushes are particularly bad at the moment as I've started this new medication. I shall give it time to settle down and then plan my next move.
I've noticed that my ibs also causes flushes too so I really must try and de-stress myself a little.
