Poor flow of urine-menopause related or not?
« on: October 14, 2015, 08:17:55 AM »

Hi there.
For eighteen months I have occasionally experienced some odd bladder/peeing symptoms, but it's now fairly constant.... My flow of urine has become slow (sometimes a dribble) often I feel as if I am squeezing it out, trickles all over the cheeks of my bottom, yuk, yuk! I can't remember when I last had a satisfying wee that came out quickly in a rush. I certainly go to the loo more than I used to, feel as if more comes out than goes in sometimes. Could this be a menopause thing? When I think "I'm off to the loo", I often release a bead or drop of urine, I don't think this is true stress incontinence tho.
I am 54 have been menopausal for about 3 yrs, I have a Merena coil in which might be significant, but it's almost 6yrs old and I'm guessing the hormone in it must be exhausted, I do remember the doc who put it in said "this should see you through your menopause". I am sweaty, but it's tolerable, I think I have got off pretty lightly tbh.
Thanks for reading
Ps just looked at one of my earlier posts, sweats are much less bad than they were, still take fan everywhere tho!

Sounds a bit like a prolapse to me.

Get it checked out by your nurse or GP

Fionabee - Yes, problems with peeing and in fact UTI type symptoms are often meno related.  EVerything in that area becomes atrophied and I understand the urethra can become squashed or at least restricted. It is important that you empty your bladder properly each time to prevent an UTI taking hold. Local oestrogen may be a good idea for you.  This is used for 14 days at the outset and then a couple of times a week after that and it will help to keep the vaginal area healthier as well as things like the urethra and bladder. It is very low dose so, though the leaflet mentions all the risks associated with full HRT, it really isn't a problem.  Do look under TREATMENTS above to get the info - Vagifem is popular with many women.
I would also have the Mirena removed - 6 years is too long and at 54 you probably don't need it and you would then find out whether you are truly post meno or not.  If your meno symptoms are not too severe then the local oestrogen may be all your need.  If you wanted to use some systemic oestrogen to help with general meno symptoms - sweats, flushes etc. then having a new Mirena fitted would be a good idea.   Keep us posted.  DG x

I should have done this before......many thanks for your replies, I think I need to go and discus this with the GP. How can such a  "natural" process cause so much grief?

Hi Fionabee - there are details of the symptoms of prolapse here. https://www.bladderandbowelfoundation.org/bladder/bladder-conditions-and-symptoms/prolapse/ Poor urinary flow is mentioned. This was one of my first symptoms when I developed a cystocele (bladder prolapse) also sometimes called front wall or anterior prolapse. It is worth getting a proper diagnosis and then referral to a pelvic floor specialist to learn different techniques to strengthen your pelvic floor before things get worse.

I agree with Dancinggirl that oestrogen can help with this type of problem.
