Good books on menopause and mental health?
« on: April 18, 2015, 01:20:12 PM »

In an effort to try and figure out what the hell is happening with me, I've started to look at mental health and menopausal books on amazon to see whether to request some books from the library.

In my searches I came across:

1. Menopause and the mind: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Menopause-Mind-Complete-Cognitive-Perimenopause/dp/0684854562/ref=sr_1_5's=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1429362833&sr=1-5&keywords=menopause+mental+health

2. Menopause and madness: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Menopause-Madness-Truth-about-Estrogen/dp/147006779X/ref=sr_1_3's=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1429362833&sr=1-3&keywords=menopause+mental+health

Can anyone recommend any good books on mental health and menopause? I know nothing about this area and would love to know more.

Thanks

Hello Greenfields.

I have been reading your posts and wanted to welcome you to the forum.

I can totally relate to what you have described and every day I am amazed at how awful these hormonal changes can make you feel.
I too find it a comfort to know that I am not alone with this suffering!

I have a book that I refer to which has helped and informed me but as it was first published in 1994 ( I bought it from a charity shop) it may now be out of print. It is written by Dr Miriam Stoppard, published by Dorling Kindersley and called  "Menopause. The complete guide to maintaining health and well-being and managing your life." The book is an all round guide but it does cover the mental and emotional problems we experience.

As with the other ladies I'll be following your journey through this very testing time!

Good luck and keep posting.

If you find an good book relating to menopause then you can ask for it added to the Books section which is found on the drop down menu under "more".

Hi Greenfields,

I am sure Hurdity would be able to advise you - I think she has mentioned Screaming to be Heard by Elizabeth Lee Vliet.

Hope things improve for you.  :)

Just to say I'm reading Jenni Murray's menopause book at the moment and finding it very useful but it's so out of date. I've been looking at the forum booklist and a lot of the books are so old ... does anyone know of some recent good publications on the menopause which cover the mental effects of HRT and menopause?

I did get the Menopause and Madness book through amazon as the library couldn't get it for me.  It was interesting but very much a personal account (the author experienced psychosis - I am so glad I don't have to add that experience to my list of symptoms!)

Two books have saved my life. Both written by an endocrinologist

Estrogen's Storm Season: Stories of Perimenopause

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0973827505?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Transitions Through the Perimenopausal Years: Demystifying Your Journey

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1412021529?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

These books are inspirational and are life changing, especially the latter that explains all the stages from start to finish, but the first is good too as it has real stories from real women. They are not specifically about mental health, but when you understand what is happening it makes you calmer and more at ease.

Thank you so much Machair - I'm going to request those through the library.

Since I posted, I've read a couple of books which have helped:

1. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Me-My-Hormones-Perimenopause-Imbalance/dp/1401942768/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1430748276&sr=8-2&keywords=pick+menopause
This one I read was an older edition (I got it from the library) - so I'm guessing the 2014 edition will be more up to date - but it really helped me to understand the 'hormonal cascade' that you can get with severe stress.

2. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Must-Be-Hormones-bio-identical-nutrition-ebook/dp/B0040GJ33A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430748387&sr=8-1&keywords=marion+gluck+menopause
This one I also got from the library but it was also helpful to read

I have just requested a very recent book from the library called the Menopause Bible - and I'm hoping that will be informative too.
