I think my Mirena coil is running out
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:47:45 PM »

Hello all,

I haven't posted on here for ages, but do check in from time to time. Glad to recognise some names and see it's still going.

So, at the start of 2010 I had a Mirena coil put in and I have to say that it was a life-changer. My periods went from serious chunkiness, to light to nothing for the last couple of years, which has been just wonderful and a huge relief.

In the last couple of months, though, I've started getting that pre-period, achy, bloated feeling in my belly and I'm tired a lot and am having mood swings. There are the old familiar headaches and flashes of pre-period nausea. I'd forgotten what it was like and I don't like it at all.

Is this what happens when the Mirena coil starts running out?

I'm not due to have it replaced till January and am not sure I can stand it till then.

Does this sound familiar?

Have a word with your Practice Nurse or go for a private chat with your local Pharmacist?  If you do a search for 'mirena coil' on here you may well find threads ……...

Thanks for replying, CLKD.

I'm planning to do that, but was kind of hoping for personal opinions from the good ladies here as well.

Hi Peachstone - good to hear from you again.

From what you describe it does sound as if the Mirena might need replacing. I think that five years is a guideline so maybe you could have it replaced now rather than wait and have to put up with the symptoms. Why not ask your GP?

Hi peachstone,
Yes it does sound like your mirena is running out.
I had exactly the same symptoms when mine started to run out after 3 years.
I had a new one fitted 2 years ago.
They say it should last 4-5 years.

I'm coming up to five years with mine too - nobody told me I'd have to get it replaced then.  :o   I was looking forward to being without it.  What happens if you don't get it replaced?

Dulciana- did you not get a card, when you had yours fitted, with the date on to have it renewed?
I assume you would need another form of progesterone if you are on estrogen.
If you haven't got your ovaries I think you can go without and just have the estrogen, although don't quote me on,that as I'm not too sure.

Thanks Dyan.   Hmm, I'd need to try and find my card, but I thought it said to get it removed in 2015.   Must look it out.   Re. ovaries, I have one.

If you have a womb and are using oestrogen then you always have to have a progesterone, even post menopause, to keep your womb lining thin.

Waves at Taz  :)

Okay, time to see the GP. I hope she'll agree for it to be replaced early because it's driving me crazy. I am morphing into a Komodo Dragon - one bite and you're dead.

It's good to be able to ask others what it felt like for them and I'm grateful for the replies. Yes, I could have just talked to the local pharmacist, but he is an over-worked, white-haired man who always has a crowd of people waiting to see him. It's not the same as asking another woman.
