Hrt and the gym?
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:04:56 PM »

Just a quick question about effects of exercise on hrt. I have been doing well on estradot 100 but started back at the gym - 1-2 hours per day, 5 days a week. After 3 days I felt awful with meno symptoms hitting hard again. At the end of last week I decided to have a rest from it and only now, 4 days later, am I feeling back to normal!

Does anybody know how exercise affects hrt and also how to compensate for it?? As I understand it, I'm already on max dose of patch, still have fairly low estrogen levels, but really still want to exercise as I used to!

Thanks for all help

Sorry I don't know how old you are but at some point we all have to accept that we just don't have the energy levels that we had when we were younger.
You say you just started back at the gym. How long had you stopped.
Perhaps you should work back in gradually as 1-2 hours per day five days a week is a lot.
Cut that in half and build it up. You may never be able to maintain your previous fitness levels. That does not mean that you can't be fit. Just means you have to have the fitness level of a menopausal women. In other words a slightly older woman.

SuzyQ.  You didn't ease back into exercise properly.  1-2 hours 5 times a week is farrrr tooooo much too quickly!!!!. I was a professional dancer & even when young I would ease back gently into training after a break, building the amount of exercise slowly over weeks or even months. As you get older this needs to be even more gradual. You could seriously damage yourself doing too much too soon.  There is a good school of thought that exercise every other day is the ideal.  I doubt it's the HRT that is the problem.  I do find I sweat much more these days even on HRT.  Start with bracing walks.  Exercise for 15-20 mins very other day - then slowly increase over 8-10 weeks.  Perhaps take some advice with a experienced trainer.

Doubt exercise has any effect on the HRT.1-2 hours per day is rather a lot.  I only do a Max of 30/40 mins in the pool 3/4 times a week, when I'm feeling up to it. Don't be hard on yourself. Maybe one day at gym, one day off, give your body a chance to recover inbetween.

I had only had a break of 3 weeks from previously going and have always done this level! During peri, before getting hrt, this was the only thing that kept me sane! It was not the exercise as such that made me I'll but the return of all my meno symptoms. Whilst I appreciate I'm getting older (49) I'm not less fit than I was a month ago (at least I hope not!). I'm just trying to understand how it affects estrogen as I have read that it does lower, and how to deal with this.

Thank you all for your advice though - I guess I'll ask the specialist if he has any ideas....

I never have that amount of time to spend at a gym ……. housework/gardening/walking takes most of my/our time.  I have to pace myself these days, from walking hours 20 years ago it has gradually reduced and after a busy walking weekend, I ached from my waist downwards  ::) ……….

Our bodies naturally slow down as we age so pushing the body ain't going to do good  ;) ……… little steps!

Well clkd I only have the time in the winter as it's minus 20 plus and snow everywhere. In the summer I golf 5 days a week so walk 5-6 miles a day. Our garden has been under 5 feet of snow since November so not much to be done there!

 ;D  :o

A few years ago a friend who lives in Cananda sent me a message: "another 10 feet fell in the night"  :o ...... now that's what I CALL snow!!!  :D

Do you enjoy golf?  Doesn't it spoil a good walk  ;) .......... I think it is a sport that I could get addicted to .......... particularly as I no longer cycle as often as I ought.

Is it clean snow?  What animals visit?

Yes we are blessed with good snow in canada!

I love playing golf as I love being outdoors and it's a constant challenge trying to do better. The social aspect is great also!  It is very addictive so if you get a chance, give it a go.

As we live in a city our main wildlife visitors are raccoons (every day) and skunks - not too exciting. We do get lots of pretty impressive birds though.

I'm not certain the HRT has anything to do with it but can only speak from personal experience.  Before starting HRT (Femoston 1/10) the only exercise I did was occasional gardening and walking the dog twice a week but for the past year I've gradually been building up my exercise and do 1 hr circuit training, 1 hr legs, bums, tums, 1 hr pilates and 1 hr callenetics - the dog walking has increased a bit as well as my fitness levels have built up  :)

I'm fairly active and haven't found HRT to have any impact either way. Exercising in the middle of a hot flush was pretty awful though

I had a lot more energy when I was on HRT and went to the gym 3 times a week. Now I have stopped it (HRT), my energy levels have plummeted!
