Test not conclusive so no HRT
« on: March 20, 2014, 04:50:54 PM »

Hi ladies, I am 42 and I am sure I am going through the menopause. No period for 13 months then bled for 4 months. Now 5 months without. I am having terrible hot flashes but the worst is my total lack of memory and awful mood swings. I have had every test going so nothing sinister going on but my bloods keep coming back normal. Apparently the hormone that goes round my body is fine but the one that sends the message from brain to ovaries is slightly high but not consistently. The doctor has basically told me I am not menopausal so there is nothing they can do. I don't know what to do now? Can't stop crying I'm so fed up - any ideas/advice would be much appreciated and sorry for the long post! X

Oh poor you :(

Look, you really need to see a specialist- gynae.
It sounds absolutely like meno and at 42 you need help and HRT.
Blood tests are always unreliable during peri which is why the results are not consistent. Goodness, if we all know this why does a dr not???

Maybe have a dip into the Daisy Network website which is for prem meno and see what others there advise.

Hi and Welcome to MM - you're in the right place for help and support.  Your symptoms do seem to be signs of peri meno and blood tests are notoriously unreliable. If you are in peri meno, at 42 you would be having a premature meno so should have HRT to protect your heart and bones unless there are other medical reasons you can't take it. I'd ask for a referral to a meno clinic if you have one locally or a gynae for further help.  Do read up all the info under the headings to the left of the screen - it really helps to be as fully clued up as possible.
Many GPs aren't very clued up about he meno so a referral would be good.
If you are offered HRT perhaps try low dose Femiston sequi to start with - it's very well tolerated by many women.
Keep us posted.  DG xxx

Hi Beverley727

 :welcomemm:

... and I agree with the others - see a specialist, as it sounds like menopausal symptoms!

Thanks for your advice ladies. It's a relief that you all think it sounds like menopause. I was starting to think I was cracking up. I will see if I can get a referral to a specialist, think I might try one of the female GPs too - might be a little more understanding. Thanks again x

Beverley - Please see one of the female GPs, they do tend to be a bit more understanding.
If not, see one of the others. Might even be male, sometimes they are helpful.

Yes I started with peri menopause around your age with similar symptoms. I am now 48. I would suggest starting with Femston as its a kind, well tolerated HRT. After about 4 years the Femston 2/10 was not keeping my symptoms at bay as I was further into the menopause. I am now on Oestrogel and Utragestan which is fab as you can easily tweak the dose and I have now read loads. I would definitely say try and start with Femston and then try Oestrogel and Utragestan if you still have symptoms. Do read loads about Oestrogel and Utrageston as some GP's panic if women want to try it  :-\ Its worked out really well for me  :)

Hi there & welcome.

GPs, don't get me started. If they would only take some time to truly listen to patients.  Definitely see another GP & maybe even ask for referral to meno or gynae clinic.  I've actually found male GP at my surgery is more sympathetic than females.  It's just finding a GP who will listen.
