If you have a tetchy bladder, tea and coffee will set it off as will booze, acidic and fizzy drinks. Sorry if this has been covered in the previous pages.

I've heard of an antibiotic that can be taken(one dose) after sex to avoid cystitis. Is this something doctors often prescribe? It was a celebrity who took it :) would be good for my piece of mind as mine only occurs after sex.

Is it definitely an antibiotic Teresa?
I thought they were only given if there was a definite infection.
Not heard of a one dose one for anything.
However, I don't get out much  ;D

I have heard that peeing after sex can prevent infection.

I'd heard that too.
Think it flushes the urethra out  :-\
Whatever, not very relaxing or romantic  ::)

I have to pee after anyway
One wouldn't take an AB as a 1-off - too many ABs are causing resistance
I stick to Ovestin1mg because I understand there may be cramps with Vagifem

The initial urine test must be sent to a Lab. for 'growing' and if there is a bug present, the correct AB prescribed.  If no bug then the lady should be offered treatment for vaginal atrophy. For me it felt like razor blades up there  :-\

:-\ ……….. does she name the AB?  I thought 1 required at least 48 hours of 'build up' for an AB to have any impact?

The AB after sex is actually quite an old method of hitting these things on the head.

My former lovely, now retired, GP offered me that as a treatment about 20 years back (turned out I had something else going on with my bladder and not an infection most of the time) but he was already prescribing a single AB to many female patients. He said that for many women taking 1 tablet after sex would prevent infections in women who were badly affected post-sex. I think it's nitrofurantin. (sp)

Is that Nitrofurantoin?

The reason bacteria are developing resistance to ABs is because of people not taking them properly, i.e. they are just taking one    :o

It might help one person in the short term - but hey, who cares about anybody alse.......

It would need to be pretty potent ?  placebo effect?  ::)

"Nitrofurantoin is usually given for up to 3 days after lab tests show that the infection has cleared. "

So maybe many years ago it was suggested as a 1-off dose but I wouldn't think that a GP would prescribe it like this now due to resistance.

from another link - " it is likely that you will be prescribed one tablet/capsule to take four times daily for 3-7 days .. " I rest my Case.

Well the only way to find out is to ask!

The instructions you listed have always applied but that is for a proven infection; this is for prevention.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger!

;D ………. how long ago did Lesley Garrett tell the public that she was advised to take 1 tablet after sex?  Or maybe that's what she decided to do ……..

Mis-use of antibiotic therapy.  One only requires ABs when there is infection present!!!

Roll on when GPs have to do specific tests to see if there is bacteria present.  There will be on 'in case'.  Lesley should have found out what the basis of infection was!

The bacteria which causes urinary tract infections lives in the bowel so it is generally lack of personal hygiene that causes the bug to be moved from back to front.

You might find this helpful reading.

https://www.scottishmedicines.org.uk/files/sapg/Management_of_recurrent_lower_UTI_in_non-pregnant_women.pdf

It's about prophylactic use of ABs and the advice here was issued in 2014.

You can see from the flow chart that hygiene measures etc are always part of treatment and prevention but for some women these are not enough.

This is another paper on it and you can read about single use ABs about half way down the page under this heading:

Antimicrobial prophylaxis

Well I spoke too soon last week  >:(!  After not using the Ovestin1mg for 15 nights, symptoms began to niggle mid-evening on Wed., with repeated visits to pee and the feeling of fullness.  A bit better 2-day after using the product every night since, no more Nurofen required.

NOTE TO SELF  :bang: :bang: :bang::kick:
