My Migraines are getting more frequent
« on: October 19, 2012, 12:37:31 PM »

I have been on Elleste 1mg for almost 6 moths.  I did have a few issues in getting HRT as I have mild migraine with aura.  Over the past few weeks, they have started to get more frequent but not worse.  I get no warning of the aura which passes in 15 minutes, but strangely I am not getting the mega headache after them which I used to.  Its just 15 mins aura and then carry on as normal.  My blood pressure is fine - i know this because I had surgery yesterday.  My weight is normal and I am generally fit and healthy - apart from when I have 18cm of steel and 6 screws taken out of my leg.  I have made an appt to see my GP on Monday to discuss.  My big concern is that I will told to stop HRT.  I know that Elleste is only 1 form of it and I think from advice that I have here in the past that I may need to look at patches.  I cannot think of going back to my life before HRT.

Have a look at this link, Rolo Mum.

It does look as if patches might be the way to go.
I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to go back to how things were pre-HRT. Make that clear to the GP!  :valkyrie:

Hi rolomum

The reason I went on hrt was to help with my headaches and  migraines but hrt hasn't helped mine but I am on patches evorel conti 50m so maybe try something else as you say you can't think of going back to life before hrt then there are a few alternatives I am thinking of changing to something different to help with my headaches  and I've been on hrt for 3 years now so it does take time to settle down have a word with your meno nurse or doc

Hi Rolo Mum

I'm in perimeno and I started to suffer with tension heads and also silent migraine,Bout a year ago, I have been prescribed Nortriptyline, apparently it is a sister drug to Amitriptllyne, these have worked very well for me and no longer get tension heads, bad headaches and also I had a heavy head feeling
At the back of my head, side effects bit of dry mouth but no tiredness or groggy feeling In Morning i started on 30mg and increased 10mg every week until at a level where pain disappeared depending on each individual, they start working at 50mg and I increased to 75mg, have found a stable dose at 55mg,  I went on HRT patches too as it is better for migraine suffers, I hope this helps, as headaches/migraines are not fun to live with. Perhaps try patches to start with and if migraines remain ask for these tablets as they really do work. Good luck

Hi smokey

Yes I have tryed amytriptaline for preventing headaches and migraines but mine was a low dosage of 10 m (1 a night) but I still got the bad heads I haven't increased the dosage perhaps my doc should have told me that I could anyway. My doc has advised I go back on topiramate 25mg then increase to 50 mg to see if that helps so here we go again anyway I will try anything to stop the damn heads they make me feel I want to bang my head against the brick wall just to get rid of the pain ( ok I would end up with a different pain ) but I think you know what I mean

Hi Js

My husband tried Amytriptyline for about 9 months to prevent his migraine , but he said they are rubbish, he increased to 40mg but gave up as the tabs made him so tired all the time.

Nortriptyline are defiantly better.

Hello rolo mum, I know this post was a few years ago but I've been reading your story from start to this last post. I like you thought I couldn't take HRT because of migraine. Until last week when symptom of menopause were unbearable, aches and pains, hot flushes and night sweats. I was two years without a period and in my ignorance thought I was through it. I was prescribed an oestrogen cream for my lady bits which were so uncomfortable, also my doctor gave me Elleste duet comi 1mg, 6 days in I'm feeling great but I woke this morning with a migraine that even my zomig won't lift.
If you receive this post can I ask you for your progress report please and ask how you been keeping over the last few years.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Rolo Mum, if you have migraines, you should not be on an HRT preparation that contains norethisterone, it's about the worst type of synthetic progesterone there is for migraine sufferers.  If I took it over a long period of time, I would probably have 5 attacks of migraine aura every single day.

After much experimentation, I now know that synthetic progesterone in conjunction with low oestrogen triggers my silent migraines which consist of visual disturbance/migraine aura without ensuing headache.  From what you have said, it sounds like you are suffereing from something very similar.  The effects of progesterone are cumulative which would explain why your migraines are coming along more frequently.

My advice is to stop taking Elleste immediately and switch to a migraine friendly regime.  I am on the Professor Studd regime of 2 pumps of Oestrogel every day, a tiny bead of testosterone everyday and 100mg of Utrogestan every month.  Utrogestan can also trigger migraines but as long as you take it vaginally and don't use too much of it, you should be OK.  It is also important to use a transdermal regime and not take anything orally.

If by any chance your doctor refuses to prescribe the Studd regime then it would be worth your consulting Professor Studd in person.  We are told that we should not have to seek help privately for HRT but if you are a migraine sufferer, you need more specialist care and a more tailormade regime and I doubt the NHS will sanction the Studd dose of Utrogestan - he prescribes 7 x 100mg each month and the NHS prescribe 12 x 100mg (I think).  It really is very important to limit your use of progesterone if you suffer with migraines, I can tell you this from personal experience.

I hope that helps.
