Bleed, post meno…again…
« on: July 01, 2024, 06:20:06 PM »

So June 23 I had random spotting after being on HRT for 8 months.  Had ultrasound (thickness 3.5mm)  a cervical investigation and all was well.  So today, a year later, i had a small show of brown blood so have made a call to speak to the doctor.

I’m currently on 100 Utrogestan and 75 conti patches

After the last investigation they said if it happens again then  I need to stop HRT for 6 weeks and then have another scan and perhaps a pipelle biopsy….. so I’ll expect that’s what needs to happen.

I’m 57 and otherwise fit and well.

Do you think I need to be concerned?  Do many of you have tests done with no reason as to why you get random bleeds or spotting?

Hi yes, I’ve had 4 different investigations at the hospital….no reason has ever been found for my bleeding.

Your doctor needs to read the up to date guidance for unscheduled bleeding. There’s no need to stop hrt for 6 weeks !

Thank you Dotty, that’s reassuring.

When did the latest guidance come in as the suggestion was made a year ago if it happens again.

Do you also have a link or screen shot I could show to my GP please as I could use this when I speak to him on Thursday  :)

Hi sorry I’ve only just seen this and I’ve replied on your other post.

As it’s over a year since your last investigation you might be referred again for a scan and vaginal scan . The procedures after that would depend on the thickness of the womb. If the thickness is ok then the recommended action would be to increase the progesterone.

I’ve had two pipelle biopsies and a hysteroscopy over three years….nothing found. Last year I had bleeding and the lining was very thin and I was told I was bleeding because it was too thin ! I was given vaginal oestrogen gel and was told this should stop the bleeding.

Ive had several episodes of bleeding over the years. At no time did anyone ever suggest I stop HRT. They advised me to change it to hopefully control the bleeding.

I've had spotting that turned to bleeding and had a hysteroscopy and all was OK. The specialist I've seen recently isn't concerned about that and even increased my oestrogen dose and discussed the fact it would cause daily spotting and that I might be better having a bleed monthly by stopping the oestrogen for a few days a month. Seems to be very common and I'm sure as well as others sharing their experiences here, you'll find lots of helpful information.  Seems to be very common with HRT.

Thank you for comments.  Spoke to gp earlier and am being referred again for another scan.

He suggested coming off hrt for the scan but I said that according g to the BMS site I don't need to...he wasn't aware of this  :-\ but said I could continue taking it.

I guess they'll be looking for lining thickness again and then perhaps pipelle biopsy?

Just another anxious time having to go through with it again.

After lots of reading here it does appear to be such a common problem  :(

Hi yes they'll be looking at the thickness of the lining and the thickness will inform the procedure.  I'v been 4 times for this over the past 4 years.  Thankfully nothing sinister was ever found but I've never been able to get any advice on how to stop the bleeding.

Dotty, that does seem to be the common denominator,  doesn't it? There doesn't seem to be a solution as to how to get the dose of HRT we need and not bleed.
Seton: I know it's easier to say than do, but worrying won't change our circumstances and you'll find as you are on HRT longer that we do seem to have to go through many tests and investigations. But as you read and chat here,  you'll learn more and begin to accept you'll likely end up knowing more, to a certain extent,  than then health professionals.  You've just informed your GP of something he didn't know already. I've learned it's part and parcel of HRT but at least we're able to be monitored this way and then have peace of mind.

Thanks Dotty.

The original advice was to stop hrt and have the scsn 6 months later...I assume that's just to see if the bleeding stops whilst off HRT?

So by staying on the hrt...which is what BMS says....this doesn't after the womb thickness?

Thank you..yes I felt awkward saying the BMS site says I don't have to come off HRT  :-\

I had a show of brown blood for 3 days with mild period pains and the blood has stopped today so I really don't know why were told to stop the HRT.

How am I supposed to approach my gp with what I've learnt from this site when he's not up to speed ?  I said maybe my hrt needs tweaking but he said I'm on "what I should be"....no mention of increasing utrogestan
