Heartburn
« on: May 30, 2024, 10:18:28 PM »

Hello
I believe I am going through the menopause. Reason I don’t know is that I came off Depo Provera in December when I turned 50, so I’m waiting to see if my periods will come back. Hopefully not as the reason I was on Depo was because of painful periods. I have a lot of symptoms but one of the worst is heartburn. It wakes me up in the night, it comes after I’ve eaten and after I have a hot or cold drink. (I don’t drink alcohol or smoke)  I’m taking general indigestion tablets which do help, but I don’t want to take too many. I can’t afford prescription medication for it.
When looking at menopause symptoms online I’ve only seen one website (American) that lists it as a symptom.
Does anyone else have chronic heart burn like this?

Morning.  yes.  yes.  yes.

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains, plus hiatus hernia and/or heartburn/reflux/. PAINFUL!  Milk of Magnesia is a good go-to or 'buscopan'.  I developed a reflux related irritating continuing cough = Omeprazolol at breekfast.  As with vagina atrophy, it's about managing the condition.

During peri some find that they become intolerant of alcohol and certain food stuffs.  In the last 12-14 months DH and I have cut most processed foods from our diet .......... shop bought cakes/crossaints, tinned rice/custard .

I have suffered with slow transit for many years which is annoying!   MayB make a note of what you eat and drink for 3-4 days, 24/7 then decide wheat you need to cut out anything.  Let us know how you get on.

You say you are taking general indigestion medication, a PPI like Omeprazole would be the first medication that a GP will prescribe for you, they can be bought over the counter if you can possibly afford that, perhaps do some research but they will sort you out in the short term.
Like a lot of medications these days, it will take at least a month and more to start to work but its definitely one of the first symptoms of aging the dreaded heartburn.

So I couldn’t stand the almost constant heartburn, especially waking up in the middle of the night with it. I was eating Rennies  like sweets! I contacted my GP and he’s put me on a month supply of Lansoprazole. Even after the first tablet I’ve had no heartburn, it’s bliss!!! I’ve only got a months supply so if it comes back I’ll have to take them daily but I’m so glad I contacted the surgery. Now if only these hot flushes would go and do one…….😆

I was diagnosed with a "slight" hiatus hernia about 7 years ago....whatever slight means.
It hasn't really bothered me until the last few months. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.
I've never had anything prescribed by GP so far. Another menopause joy!!!!
Thanks ladies.

I have recently been diagnosed with a small hiatus hernia and a stomach ulcer following an endoscopy appointment. I started on 30 mg of Lanseroprazole once in the morning and to start with everything was fine but then I started to get indigestion again in the evening and during the night. My GP has adjusted my medication to 15 mg in the morning and 15 mg at night and everything is much better.  Hopefully this will allow my stomach ulcer to heal.  I really didn’t think I could tolerate taking a ppi but like one of the ladies on the forum said you just have to persevere and go with what is right for you.  I am feeling so much better but it can take a few weeks to settle down.

They vary in degree/measurement so the larger the slide the more space for stomach contents to go back the wrong way. Mine is small, still big enough to have caused problems though. It's good not to overfill your stomach, sit upright etc. Nothing that pushes stomach contents up.

Ive had gastric problems for decades and had numerous investigations and had discussion with consultants and dieticians and read loads, recently read a medical journal, that I feel like I'm becoming a gastric specialist. Of course I'm not. But I've tried various things and definitely if you have hiatus hernia or acid reflux small and often helps and not laying down or bending over when you've eaten too. One that has made a big difference to me is avoiding alcohol. It was triggering heartburn. I had a glass of wine on Christmas day but otherwise not had a drink for 14 months. I realise that's difficult for some people but ive not missed it. The other thing is drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin. I don't touch the stuff now. Some things have it in and people aren't aware eg nurofen, anadin.
