Which progestreone next?
« on: April 02, 2024, 04:10:10 PM »

Hi all,

I'm 45 and currently about to try another progesterone, after almost a year of trying to find the right one. I've had intolerances to some as well as PMS in the past so have gone private with Newson Health, as my GP wouldn't refer me to a specialist. They recommended that I did Oestrogen only (Everol 50 patch) for 3 months before trying another prog. I had an appointment with them two days ago and they suggested the desogestral POP x2 with continuation of the Everol 50 patch. If that is no good, continuous Provera will be next. It's really up to me which to try next, does anyone have any useful insight/experience over which is the best to try first? (to save myself a few weeks of recovery/rebalancing  ;D)

Thanks in advance xx

Toss a coin? Unfortunately you won't know which suits you until you try. If you've used POP before as bcp and been good on it I'd go for that. Are you meno? Why are they suggesting continuous if you're not? I've stayed on sequi to give me more time off the dreaded utro.

Hi, thanks for replying. I’ve had really bad bleeds on sequi and have always had horrific PMS so Newson Health have allowed the continuous, they aren’t sure if I’m peri or meno as periods have been suppressed. My gp did, and then changed her mind. Would love Drospirenone as part of HRT but it doesn’t seem to be available in the uk yet. Desogestral pop seems to be the next best thing. Utro was really bad for me too, have you tried anything else?

Hi PennyD,
I was interested to see your post and that Newsholme Health have said that you can take Evorel 50 for 3 months before re-introducing a new form of progesterone.

As yet, I have not been able to tolerate the full protective dose of Progesterone.  So far I have tried:
Utrogestan orally and vaginally
Cylogest
Evorel Conti
Provera
However, some of them I only tried for 1-2 days and stopped due to severe depression and other side effects.  I have had one month on HRT then one month off and then one month back on.

Like you I didn't know what one to try next.  I ordered some of the above from independent pharmacies or got a prescription from my GP.

I can tolerate Evorel Conti 1/2 patch with Evorel 50 1/2 patch i.e. 50% of full progesterone dose.

I am going to try Femseven Conti next and if I don't tolerate it I will book a review at a private meno clinic.
I will also ask my GP to refer me to a NHS meno clinic.

Good luck.  I hope that your next trial works out better.

Have you thought about a Mirena coil? Newson Health fit those too. The dose in it is so low it doesn't affect most women. If it affects you, you could have it removed...

Otherwise it's just trial and error.

Hi Anonymous1, your list of failed progesterones is exactly the same as mine!

Yes, NH advised me to level out the Estrogen and get levels up before trying Utrogestan again - then I got another doctor and she told me we could try more, after noting my wariness of another try at Utro. I've been able to tolerate drospirenone in Eloine and Yasmin but thought I'd have to forget it as HRT - However I've managed to get my hands on it this morning (Slynd) through NH, hopefully if it arrives! It's well known for balancing mood and stopping irregular bleeding - maybe the POP as hrt is worth looking into? I see it's been added to the British Menopause Society's guidelines for HRT combinations.

Here's hoping, best of luck to you too, we will get there! x
