Urogestron/Bowel Sleepyness/Stopped Working
« on: November 29, 2023, 08:56:09 AM »

Hi Ladies

I am a newbie so be gentle with me  :)

Been on HRT since March 2023.....first of all patches which I felt great on for 2 weeks, then stopped absorbing, and also 1 x 100mg Urogesteron which I didnt tolerate orally so switched to taking vaginally.....All was ok ish (the usual variation of upping and changing things!) until I got an applicator to insert the Urogesteron and get it higher "up" so to speak.

Last month my bowels completely stopped working to the point that I wasnt passing anything, not a blockage said GP but to rule that out I am awaiting results from bloods etc next week, so will wait for those...!

With a history of bowel issues, prolapse, rectopexy pairs x 2 and endo, I didnt think much of it would be HRT related in all honestly.  I did some research and apparently (I am no medic!) Urogesteron relaxes all smooth muscle.....what is the bowel and stomach? - smooth muscle.  I had some belief that where the tablet was inserted right next to my bowel, perhaps that was the cause of my issues, so against my better judgement, feeling so ill I couldnt go to work, I decided to stop the Urogesterton for a week just to see if any difference....

Hey presto within days, bowel is working again! - not perfect but definate change, I can actually feel my stomach and bowel, it was almost numb before and just nothing happened, no urge, no ache, nothing....

I also take double dose desogestrol x 75mg each....to control my endo....

Some of you may know where I am going with this  ;D

My question....do any of you (off licence) take desogestoral as your progestone part of HRT? i honestly cannot back onto Urogestron, I cannot function...the mini pill double dose has controlled my lining so well over the years that at last hospital visit to take samples of my womb, my lining was too thin.....

I have seen some trial reports that it "may be possible" to use this dosage of desogestoral but nothing concrete.

As it stands, I am currently day 5 on sandrena 1mg, and my 150 desogestoral and feeling human again, not perfect but 100% better than I felt before.....

Any comments, thoughts welcome.  I see the GP next week so obviously I could be completely wrong but bit of a coincidence that I stopped the other progesterone and magically my bowels have started to function again...

Would be interested in anyone else having this strange symptom of sleeping bowels on same drug?

Thank you for getting this far and please remove my post if it is not appropriate.

xxx

I know what I would do without any hesitation and that is stick with the desogestrol and have yearly scans to check your womb lining.

This is the second thread I've replied to today regarding problems with Utrogestan.  It really is wretched stuff that causes endless side effects and yes, it did does affect your bowels when used vaginally.  Some women get constipation and some women have dreadful diarrhoea.  Bowel/stomach problems are probably our second most debated subject on here.

So I would most definitely stick with the desogestrol.

Thank you!

I literally was not able to function, I take movicol and tripled the dose and still nothing, it was like my stomach was asleep, no pain no ache, no nothing, never known anything like it.  Have continued with desogestral and bloods have already been taken along with stool sample last week, so figured that one or two weeks without urogesteron and having a thin lining currently wouldnt do me harm.  In all honesty, I felt that ill that I was beyond caring.

Not being able to do a thing for the last 3 weeks and feeling so nauseaous and not able to eat solids, is not fun and not even half living. xx

I am on some facebook forums and couldn't find a thing about guts going to sleep when taking urogesteron vaginally so its good to know I am not alone!

I take it vaginally and I get the worst constipation. It increases to the point I end up with pain in the middle of tummy where its all backed up and slow moving. I do go, but that is due to what I eat to make that happen. I hate utrogestan with a vengeance and I still get a lot of the symptoms you are meant to avoid with vaginal route - mood, digestive, bloating etc.

Hey presto....first time in two months, took 5 days but had a NORMAL movement!!!!!

Currently looking at study papers that state 150mg of desogestral may be able to be used as progesterone component......with HRT....will be seeing if GP is willing to go off licence..... ;D

Hi Slowmo, so sorry you had also experienced the horrible side of Utro!
Only a week or so  ago I described my bowel problems caused by Utrogestan vaginally. It was pure horror. The vaginal route is definitely too close to the bowel and has huge influence on the gut!  I am amazed that there is nothing in the leaflet about this.

I tried everything, I pierced the capsule and squeezed almost everything out so that only a minimal amount remained inside. But I still had bad intestinal symptoms. I had abdominal cramps, constant bowel movements (sometimes I sat on the toilet all night, crying!) and diarrhoea. After a month I was completely exhausted and had lost several kilos.... I stopped taking the devil's stuff (unfortunately also the Oestrogen...) and most of the issues are gone (just that my peri-symptoms are back). I am still horrified. They say that Utrogestan as a natural progesterone, which is so similar to the body's own progesterone, does not cause any side effects. And then you take it and experience something as horrible as this... I will be talking to my Meno Specialist on 12.12. 23 and will ask her to presribe Crinone Gel, I really hope she will be open to that idea. I am sure the problems are not caused by natural progesterone, but through the special preparation of Utrogestan!

I thought 2xPOP was recognised as an option for the prog part of hrt? So apart from utro not agreeing with you I suspect you're on too much.

So....an update!

GP happy to stick to 150mg desogestral which I've been on for years plus the sandrena gel 1.5mg

1st week great and then tummy and bowel issues started, nausea and just feeling utterly crap unable to eat today having woken in night to odd bowel movement and feeling sick for few hours.

I really thought I'd finally nailed it...would happily come off the lot bit cannot cope with the nausea/hot flash episodes of meno..

Too much samdrena do you think now I'm.not on utro?

MayB nothing to do with the HRT but your overall diet?

Mid-December I began eating crap, i.e. processed cakes/biscuits/olives - my bowel protested and I felt really really ill.  For 3 hours I wanted to die.  Too much hidden fats/sugars!

What was odd about the bowel movement?

Sort of urgency but consistency not normal! Diet quite bland and not huge buy tend to stick with safe things! Today I've literally no idea what is going on, Hardly eaten feel so icky and water only.  Its like my bowel feels pressure and stomach/womb almost pms but I don't have bleeds.

Had bloods done a few months ago and poop tested all fine!

So why do I feel so poorly xxx this meno journey is so rubbish

It is rubbish.  Hormones can certainly impact on bowel action.  Prior to a bleed beginning I would have 'to dash' or else.  Even if a period wasn't due!

I too have safe food stuffs, however I am eating more greens and trying to add different fruits to my daily diet.  Gradually so as not to overwhelm the system  ::).  I have to tick when I empty or I cant' remember because my bowel continues to feel like it 'needs to go'.   >:(

totally understand that feeling!!

I am still trying to work out if my "hot flashes" where I experience sudden bowel urge and feel sick as a dog in waves are menopausal....had them a few years now, disappeared a few months ago but keep getting the odd one like the other night, I just don't understand it all.  Not a lot has changed!
