Questions about moving to continuous Utrogestan
« on: January 12, 2024, 12:22:48 AM »

I am currently on a 12 day a month cycle of 200mcg of Utrogestan. I'm generally fine but towards the end of the 12 days I tend to get certain symptoms such as fast bowel movements and headaches.

I'd like to try continuous regime in the hope that it's just having a big and quick build up of Utro that is the issue and it might settle down if steady.

My first question is currently I'm on a total of 2400mcg a month, but continuous would take me to circa 3000mcg. Is there a way to take it 'continuously' but keep it close to the lower number e.g. 3 days on, 1 day off or something?

And my second question is should I start continuous on what would usually be the first day of my 12 day med cycle?

I would really prefer not to take it vaginally (already using Vagifem for one thing and it's a faff).

I'm also on 3 pumps oestrogel, 46 and perimenopausal.

If you want to go continuous you continue with your gel and just take the utrogestan every day.  Some take 1 tablet some take 2.  Not sure what the current rules are.  Not sure what you mean by the 3000mcg (whatever you take is only replacing hormones), so not sure why you are worried about the dosing?

I would say if you are taking the utrogestran to just do your 12 days and then start straight away with the continuous.

You can take utrogestan orally, not sure if thats what you do now?

Sorry as not sure if this helps.

Thanks I take it orally now.

By going to continuous I will be on 30 x 100mcg e.g. 30000mcg total.

Currently my total monthly dose is 12 x 200mcg e.g. 24000mcg total.

So I'm trying to find out if there's a way not to be on such a high dose when I change to continuous, but for it still to count as broadly continuous w.g. 3 days on, 1 day off.

Otherwise with it being a higher monthly dose I worry my symptoms might get even worse, which would defeat the object of moving from sequential to continuous in the first place.

It's a 28 day cycle so it does work out the same, 200mgx12 days or 100mgx28 days. There is another way which is useful in late peri which is 100mgx25 days the a 3 day break which allows for a bleed if there's been a build up. If you still have a cycle of your own you're likely to bleed according to that regardless of how you take utro.

Oh this is so helpful thank you. I think I'll try that out. I don't know if I have my own cycle as such but with my current regime I do have a bleed around the end of my utrogestan sequencing.

Two and a half years ago when peri started my periods were 8 months apart so hard to say if that's now pushed me into late peri or not.

I guess I should speak to a specialist and see because even on a 28 day regime it's slightly more progesterone than now (2800mcg vs 2400mcg on sequential).
