Testosterone and body odour
« on: December 18, 2023, 09:50:05 PM »

Hi ladies,

I’ve started on testosterone (testogel) about a week ago, a baked bean sized amount once a day on my inner wrist as advised by my gp. So far so good except I’ve noticed my deodorant doesn’t appear to be working any more, I’ve noticed body odour in my armpits halfway through the day despite not changing deodorant or doing anything else differently. Has anyone else experienced this? I use deodorant which usually works for me, not antiperspirant. I really could do without another thing to worry about so if anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Many years ago I began a thread 'Oh errrrr ' because. my body odour had altered though no one in the shop queue backed away and DH said that he didn't notice.  I do though.

I find that keeping under arm hair to a minimum helps .........

I can’t understand why it should give one a more masculine smell if it’s within the female range and supposed to restore one to pre meno levels of T. I don’t have armpit hair. I can see myself stopping the T because of this tbh. Maybe it’s because I’m in peri with regular periods, maybe I don’t really need it. It’s so confusing. Maybe I could try half a bean instead.

Often the change in body odour happens when oestrogen levels drop and testosterone  is more dominant I seem to remember. Is your HRT dose correct do you think?

Hi Taz

I upped my oestrogel to 3 pumps about 3.5 months ago and the difference has been amazing, I feel much better but felt something was still missing. I would love to go to the gym and go running but if I do I am exhausted and I don't get that after workout lift. Im 47 but can only really manage walks and a bit of swimming comfortably. I wonder how much testosterone levels drop by my age. I have stopped taking testosterone today as I just don't think it's for me at this time. I can always change back later. Even my cat noticed, she was writhing about in my armpit and attacking my feet in a frenzy last night. I would still welcome any thoughts or suggestions in case I change my mind later. Thanks ladies x

You're only a week into using it, to put it bluntly. These are hormones. You don't know what the end result is going to be until several months have passed. Immediate side effects typically subside. Even if this IS caused by testosterone. Give your body a chance to figure out what to do with a suddenly new input of something before thinking about chopping and changing it... sheesh....

Joziel are you aware of how rude you are coming across. Please don't respond to any of my posts again. People on here are here because they are struggling, they are posting about very sensitive issues and you should be responding with some sort of sensitivity. It's really sad that you need telling that as a grown adult.

I felt that joziel's response was a bit harsh.

Recently I started to realise my deodorant wasn’t working as well as it normally did. I’d always used the same one. I’ve changed brands which seems to have made a difference. Im not on testosterone. I started hrt about 3 months ago. Could it be a menopause issue not a testosterone treatment issue?

Hi ladies, thanks for your replies. I’m really in touch with my body and I just know it’s the testosterone. I think the thing that frightens me is that with T you can get side effects that are irreversible even if you stop taking it. So for my scent to change so drastically in just a few days was alarming. I was worried about what else might happen and whether that would be reversible. So with that level of anxiety about it, it wasn’t doable for me. I may try again in future when I am in a better place emotionally. I switched to an antiperspirant today which has helped s as little.

Sorry, I did say 'to put it bluntly' and not going to blow smoke up ya bum. You can't tell anything about a hormone and how it will settle after one week. Presumably you have good reasons for wanting to try it in the first place because it's not exactly easy for most people to get, so to stop it after a week because you're worried you will somehow be irreversibly changed and because you have more BO is... well, I frankly struggle with the logic of that. (That's me being restrained, there.)

I wouldn't mind stinking to high heaven for the libido and ability to think straight and gain muscles and maintain a good body weight and so much else that testosterone gives me, but I wouldnt' assume any side effects I had after a week would still be there 3 months later either. That's not how hormones work.

Hi Katherine,

I have been on testosterone for just over a year. I love it, but not going to lie, I did quickly notice I had BO. Not pleasant, but I do think a lot of it was down to me having virtually no BO since my 40s. I think it returned me to my prime! I now have to use a strong deodorant like 'Mitchum' to prevent any risk of embarrassment. (I'm pretty self conscious). The only other negative was greasier skin occasional spots. But again, a change to skin care dealt with this.

The positives are great (tbh not that much affect on libido) but I am mentally sharper, more resilient and can lift like a beast in the gym!

I would suggest trying for a bit longer, maybe on a smaller dose?

Good luck xx
