Testosterone dose problems
« on: December 18, 2023, 12:36:24 PM »

Hi
I seem to be stuck in the middle of a prescription issue between my menopause doctor and my GP.

I have been on Tostran gel 2% for about 8 months. One pump on alternate days.
My testosterone levels are now a little high so my GP told me to go back to the menopause doctor.
The menopause doctor asked my GP to change my prescription to Testim gel 1%.

I now have a small tube of Testim gel. It says it's 50mg and that 'each single dose container of 5g contains testosterone 50mg'.

A conversion table I've looked up online says that 50mg is 0.05g. I know it sounds daft but I don't know if my tube is 50mg or 5g from what it says on the tube.

My GP's instruction on the prescription is "apply once a day"
My menopause doctor's instruction for my prescription is "please change to testim gel which is 1% and give a more stable level and is used daily"

I have no idea how much testosterone in the form of Testim gel to apply each day, and I don't know how to measure it out of the tube even if I did know how much to apply.

I will go and see my GP again, but when I last communicated with her (online through the NHS app) she said she is frustrated because she isn't used to prescribing testosterone for women and I think she feels she doesn't get enough information from the menopause doctor.

Can anyone help by giving me any experience or further information about how much is in my tube, the dose and how to apply it?

Hi, were you prescribed only one tube? I use a pea size amount daily and the one tube lasts 10 days.

Hurdity did a good post some time back, on the various testosterone options available at the time including he usual dosing amounts of each. Might be worth a look to see if it helps you. Hopefully this link works:

Yes, I have only one tube, which looks like it will only last a week.

Thank you, that post is really helpful, I thought there'd be something but it's hard to search through to find things.
I'm wondering whether to stay with my Tostran and use it every three days instead of every other day, or just pump out less than a full pump every other day.

I'm also really wondering if it's worth staying on the testosterone at all, it seems that it's really hard to get an accurate dose with the one I've been prescribed now and I'm anxious enough about everything anyway without being caught in the middle between my GP and the menopause doctor.

Hi, I guess it depends on what symptom you're trying to relieve with testosterone and is it working for that?

Perhaps the different testosterone brands/types are different in the way oestrogen preparations are very different with some working for some people and others working for other people, but none of them work for everyone in the way they are meant to.

I hope that made sense, it could be that you'd do better guessing half a pump of tostran every other day than guessing a tenth of a tube of the new stuff every day.

In general the dose for women is usually a tenth of that for men.

For me, I'd try the Testim as advised and I'd go with the pea sized amount that ABBA Fan uses. If I was unsure I'd go slightly smaller amount rather than bigger. It's got to be worth a try if you feel that you are benefitting overall from Testosterone.

Or, if you are concerned, are you able to ask the menopause specialist to re-confirm the dosage?

Thanks everyone for your responses and advice. I'm going to ask my doctor for more Testim and will try that for a bit.
