HRT absorption & COVID
« on: December 14, 2023, 03:19:14 PM »

Hi all,

I have primary ovarian failure (early menopause), so HRT is essential for me. I have been doing well on the gel for 6 years and today I feel like my life is over. On Friday I contracted COVID and since then, have not been able to absorb any of the gel. I have rubbed 6 pumps in and nothing.

I have been reading 100's of comments about this happening to others on here, but no one has said if it resolved. Has anyone had any experience with this?

My whole world has changed within a week, I just don't get how a virus could cause so many problems.

Hey I’m also POI. I was ticking along fine on HRT (Oestrogel and utrogestan) until I had Covid. Now despite being on almost double the licensed dose my Estradiol level is always in the post menopausal range. I’ve been like this for 2 years and it’s getting slowly worse. I was diagnosed with long Covid but it now seems apparent that I’ve stopped absorbing.

I saw a specialist who suggested I change to the mirena coil and then increase my estrogen again (now lenzetto 6 sprays). Then if still low estrogen she will get me on the implant.

I feel horrendous one week into the mirena and my vile migraines (which I get daily) have ramped up a notch, I’m hoping this settles.

What HRT are you on? Transdermal? If so I wonder if it’s the ability to absorb that covid messes up? Xx

There is an interview on YouTube between Dr Nick Panay and Diane Danzebrink discussing how Covid affects hormones / HRT. The thought is that Covid affects the oestrogen receptors.

Hi,
I feel so angry this stupid virus has done this to me and others. I'm sorry you're going through it too.
I was also on estrogel amd utrogestan.
Are you seen by Chelsea and Westminster? I've asked for them to call me next week so I can beg for the implant. I can't carry on like this.
I had some lenzetto spray left over and tried it yesterday, but it didn't work.
Have you found its helped you st all? Xx

Covid triggered peri for me and then each vaccine ramped up symptoms. The dr at Newson Health wasn’t surprised to hear this.

Anyway, are you able to switch oestrogen product? Gel was working fine for me, but I was enticed by the convenience of Lenzetto - big mistake! It’s doing nothing for me at all, so back to the gel I go…

Hopefully you will feel better once the covid passes and the gel will work for you again. Get well soon x

Hi sjpercy3
I’m sorry you are going through it too, it really is so awful. The last 2 years have been a living hell for me I feel I’ve lost everything about my life and I’m left just existing.
The lenzetto absorbs marginally better for me but I still only achieve low levels and I’m on 6 sprays!!! It seems quite weak. I’m also going to see about the implant, I’ve been told it’s a year wait though!!! I’m thinking of trying to raise the money for the first one privately as I’m so so desperate.
I had a mirena fitted 10 days ago and I was hoping this would help but I’m having horrific migraines. This is another meno/long Covid joy chronic migraines it’s been brutal. I got them semi under control (still daily but able to just function) as soon as the mirena was in they are worse. I don’t know whether to wait to see if it settles or whip it out. I spend my life in constant overwhelm and can’t make decisions!
My brain is saying “you need estrogen” so I increase estrogen and it doesn’t work then my brain says “do you need estrogen maybe it’s not helping” then round in a circle it goes!

Hi Maddie,

I tried 6 sprays of the Lenzetto today and it just feels weak and has made no real difference. Can I ask why you have a mirena? Surely the progesterone is going to push your estrogen down further. I have been taking my progesterone tablets this week and I'm getting symptoms from them because I don't have enough estrogen.

I called Oxford Menopause Clinic today which offers the implant privately. I'm going to use them if the NHS is too long. Here is the website in case you're interested, unfortunately, it is pricey: https://www.oxfordmenopause.com/

Heyyyyy

I’m on the mirena as I dont get on well with utrogestan and I need womb protection.

I’ve always felt that due to my horridly low estrogen (140pmol on last check) I get awful progesterone symptoms. It’s like the progesterone pushes down the estrogen, is that actually a thing?

I feel this week exactly how I felt when I reduced down to 2 pumps of gel (I had this mad idea that I would be better off not on HRT so started to ween off and I had horrific migraines).

My menopause dr mentioned the Oxford place to me!! I think I’m going to do it, I’m worried I will get negative side effects but it can’t be worse than this right?

Please feel free to private message me if you want to chat sounds like we are similar x

Oh also my specialist told me 3 sprays of lenzetto is only thought to be equivalent to 2 pumps of gel. It’s really weak.
