Coming off Depo Provera at 50
« on: December 01, 2023, 12:14:15 PM »

I’ve been on Depo Provera for 12 years. I had my last injection yesterday as I’m about to turn 50 this month. I have no idea if I’m premenopausal as I’ve had no symptoms and the Depo stopped my periods 12 years ago. I just wondered if anybody else stopped using Depo at 50, and what happened with their periods. My nurse suggested other options such as the coil, tablets and patches, but I don’t want to use any of these unless I have to, as I only used Depo to stop my periods as they were really painful, and not as contraception. I’ve searched online and have read that after stopping Depo your periods can take up to a year to return, but there’s nothing online about stopping at 50 years old. I just want to be prepared. Thank you in advance.

I would be prepared for a bleed. The average age of meno is 51 so you might be OK or you might not. Do you know how old your mother was? That can give you an indication.
